The judge told prospective jurors they could leave, after changing the trial date for a man accused of vandalizing Victoria’s only Jewish temple.

Joshua Paul Muniz’s indictment was changed Monday, so lawyers are allowed extra time to work on the case, Victoria County District Judge Robert C. Cheshire said.

The indictment now specifies that B’nai Israel Temple is a place of worship. Before, the indictment said Muniz vandalized the temple because of a bias against a group — the change reads “ a group identified by religion.”

“I hope you’re not going to be too disappointed to find there’s no jury trials to send you to,” Cheshire told the pool of jury candidates who had assembled earlier that morning.

Jury selection for Muniz’s trial is scheduled to begin June 16.

Muniz is accused of spray painting swastikas and other graffiti on the temple on June 14 of last year.
