We were pleased to see a couple of educational events on wildlife taking place in the area.

The Victoria County 4-H sponsored wildlife project promises to be a hit with youngsters. Texas Zoo Director Doug Hotle along with Texas Parks & Wildlife specialists will give presentations about wildlife habitat, including those of the endangered Attwater Prairie Chicken, quail and wild turkey.

This event is scheduled 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the STCE Park off Farm-to-Market Road 447 near Nursery. And all local youth in kindergarten through the 12th grade are invited to attend.

Last Friday, the Texas Zoo held its first Endangered Species Day, an event that should return each year to help educate our youth about animals whose survival are threatened. And students from area schools traveled to Victoria for the event.

Last week the Texas Zoo participated in Migration Day in conjunction with Stewardship: Beyond Borders at the Aransas Wildlife Refuge. Eric MeBane, Texas Zoo animal curator, took two species of hawks that are endangered for the event. This event was well attended by youth from the region.

“We want to get kids thinking about conservation, recycling and the importance of making sure these animals don’t go extinct,” said Tammy Zellner, Texas Zoo education curator.

We think it is important to learn about our wildlife. Our children will appreciate these efforts and likely will teach their children to respect and appreciate these animals.

Kudos to these organizations for presenting educational events on habitat and the animals that are endangered.
