Editor, the Advocate:
Today’s “Other Views” (May 17) piece by the vacuous Walter Williams is, while an excellent example of the state of today’s political punditry, pure balderdash, totally illogical from irrelevant start to immaterial — to say nothing of mendacious — finish. First, were anyone to get 99 of 100 answers on a test wrong, that would not logically or rationally mean the last answer was wrong. All of Williams blabber concerning past “doomsday” theorists means absolutely nothing where the question of the threat posed by global warming and ecosphere pollution are concerned.
That is not only an opinion, mine, it is a fact no logician will dispute.
Finally, we have Williams’ dissertation on “a few facts.” The fact of the greenhouse effect is disputed by no one, demonstrated and demonstrable as it is in high school classrooms around the world (even the United States). The rest of Williams “facts” are also true; and, inasmuch as they say nothing about the effect of the greenhouse effect doubled, tripled, or quadrupled — the point of global warming alarms — immaterial.
Finally, we have the comical views of one Kenneth Schustereit. Ridicule, humorous or otherwise, proves utterly nothing logically. There is, therefore neither any way — nor any reason — to reply. There is one exception, an exception that again demonstrated the mentality and credibility of people like Williams and Schustereit. Google the NPR report to which the latter refers, to see what and how he has taken data favorable to his point of view out of context, ignoring the rest. The report, in other words, does not refute theories — or the fact — of global warming.
“Facts” taken out of their context are not only illogical, they are deceptive and deceitful. They do say a good deal about those who use them, however.

Another well done, footnoted article about the polar bear thing.

May 21, 2008 at 6:28 p.m.swbones: try looking up the difference between "climate' and "weather".
May 21, 2008 at 12:32 p.m.Kenneth:, thank you for responding.
May 21, 2008 at 10:28 a.m.Sorry for sticking to the polar bear, but that is tangible evidence that must be explained. I promise this will not turn out to be a war of cut-and-paste.
I do understand the computer models need more data provided by the satellites to calculate what is happening to the Greenland glaciers overall, but those models were not the reasons given for putting the polar bears on the endangered list.Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne acknowledged the melting of Arctic ice as a reason to put the polar bears on a threatened species list, but he did not go as far(rightly so) to say the melting Arctic ice was caused by man. That is beyond the scope of the Interior Department. The Interior Department and the Fish and Wildlife Service agreed that the polar bear are swimming longer distances causing many to drown and starve in pursuit of their prey. In fairness, the polar bears survived the last warming trend over 130,000 years ago. Dale Hall (director of the Fish and Wildlife Service) said he saw no separate risk to the bears from the current oil and gas activity. It's the environmental groups and scientist that are trying to make a case for greenhouse gases being the culprit.
Worldwide population of the polar bear stands at 20,000 to 25,000 and about 20% of them occupy the shores of Alaska and nearby coastlines. This is a group that is in danger. Most of the studies have been in the western Hudson Bay in Canada. Their study showed a 22% decline from the year 1987 to 2004. Total polar bear population was 1,194 in 1987 and 2004 they counted 935. Not alarming stats I agree, but remember in old days theoretically, a Freon leak was not supposed to happen in a closed system. I added a half a can myself, and went on about my business, because I just knew a mechanic would tell me I had a major leak. Maybe that's not a good analogy, but it's how I will process global warming (PC climate change), in small incremental steps.

Let me explain my cherry pick statement from yesterday….What was not acknowledged.
Feb 6, 2007 First major report since 2001, the world’s most authoritative group of climate scientists issued its strongest statement yet on the relationship between global warming and human activity. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said the likelihood was 90 percent to 99 percent that emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, spewed from tailpipes and smokestacks, were the dominant cause of the observed warming of the last 50 years. In the panel’s parlance, this level of certainty is labeled “very likely.”
I dont know how much warmer we can take it in the Middle East.. 3 of snow in the western desert of Iraq and snow in Baghdad this winter. But I guess the Polar Bears can move here when the rest of the Globe heats up .
May 21, 2008 at 10:14 a.m.Do any of you Socialist have Al Gores number.. I need to call him and ask whats up with this last winter.. I was freezing my a** off out here
If it is too cold for flip flops, tank tops and shorts its too cold
If it ain't on MSNBC it ain't right Mike? The same MSNBC that is now swapping spit with uberLeft Air America, a so called network that cannot raise enough money to stay on the air without uncle money bags George Soros.
I know I put this out before but maybe you will look at it this time even though Bathtub Boy Keith Oralman didn't note it. Over 31,000 American Scientist signed the petition.
Be sure and check out the qualifications of the signers. I believe Al "the losing tree" Gore is much less qualified to speak on this subject than these signers.

May 21, 2008 at 9:08 a.m.The world needs more polar bars, if you ask me.
May 21, 2008 at 2:11 a.m.I'll meet you at the polar bar, and have me a taste of Jimmy Bean!
May 21, 2008 at 1:01 a.m.Polar Bars? I love those places. They always have the coldest beer. And I love a cold polar beer! oooOHH, .......never mind......
May 21, 2008 at 12:42 a.m.Better write John McBush a letter also.
May 20, 2008 at 10:20 p.m.That's the sandwichh right-wing version, but nothing has been proved or rebuked. I can read and hear that blabber all day long but where are the credible resources?
May 20, 2008 at 5:35 p.m.The United States government put the polar bears on an endangered species list because of global warming. That is a stated fact.
Al Gore, it all you want, but if you don't mention oil companies wanting to suppress any evidence of man-made global warming; then you have an agenda. That's my theory.
I continue to be a novice on global warming, but I believe the world scientists will come to a conclusion without consulting with Al Gore.
Ah to return to such nonsense as this nonsense.
Manmade global warming has all but been debunked. The polar bears have been PROVEN to have grown in population many fold. Al Gore has been found out to be in the $$$$ for this global warming thing, for he and many behind this are all for governmental control of much of what we partake of. The World Wildlife Frund has put a flat flase ad on the TV pulling at the heartstrings for polar bears, but what they are seeing are bears scared of what they don't understand, a camera man.
Really people, if we are going to deal with this energy policy thing, and this is all it is mainly right now, let's do it with scientific FACTS.
May 20, 2008 at 5:10 p.m.My question was not vague.
The government specifically said that they were putting the polar bears on the endangered species list, because of global warming.
Was this a conspiracy? Is this overreacting and incompetence? Or were they doing everything in their power to avoid the Greenpeace lawsuit? Were they afraid that the courts, might ask for evidence of global warming they were concealing and decided putting the polar bears on the endangered species citing global warming, was her best tactical move?
None of the above?
May 20, 2008 at 2:04 p.m.I am not anti-government or government for all the answers.
Kenneth
May 20, 2008 at 11:17 a.m.Saying Al Gore is solely responsible for the global warming myth just to line his pockets, while you dismiss the fact oil companies want to make all reports of man-made global warming disappear, makes your one-sided view questionable to me. I don’t know von Luebbert, but I did notice a lot of cherry picking. This is just my view point.
I want to know if the United States government is helping to line Al Gore’s pockets by putting the polar bears on the endangered species list, due to global warming. Is the government in on the conspiracy or they just incompetent?
I am not an environmentalist or a climatologist, so I get my information in bits and pieces. I don't put much stock in what I read unless I see a disclaimer saying "we all agree.” The last I heard is that we all agreed that the globe was indeed warming, but it’s that “man-made" part ,that we disagree on. I could be wrong.
I went to IRN and read some of the ....err... writings and commentary. This is just a sample of there views:
May 20, 2008 at 12:34 a.m.This is the first of a series of occasional columns I will write ripping to shreds every single Democratic candidate for president.
Why just the Democrats? Because they are all evil. They are all rotten to the core. They are all miscreants not even deserving citizenship in our great country, let alone the privilege and honor of serving as president of the United States.
They are liars – one and all. They are thieves. They want to steal more of your money. They want to steal more of your freedom. They want to steal your country away from you.
They are moral reprobates. They would sell their souls to gain the White House if any of them had one.
I don't have any other comment......
