Frances Cervantes is ecstatic about the Girl Scouts’ new service center in Victoria.

“Before, we were really cramped,” said Cervantes, retail operations manager. “Now we have room for everything, including a backyard where the girls can even camp.”

The Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas will celebrate with a grand opening and ribbon cutting at 3 p.m., Thursday, at 104 W. River St.

The new service center consists of three buildings - an office building with two offices and a conference room, the retail shop where scouting items including uniform patches are available for sale and the program center with room for activities by the scouts.

Candelario “Candy” Garcia, a member of the Girl Scouts board, provided the land for the complex at a discounted price, plus donated the material and labor to get the facility ready, according to a news release from the Girl Scouts.

“This has truly made our dreams come true and will allow the Girl Scouts to increase programs and continue to serve girls in Victoria and the surrounding communities for years to come,” Michelle Leeman Martinez, director of communications, said in the news release.

The Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas serves 26 counties from Victoria to Corpus Christi and Laredo to the Rio Grande Valley, about 32,000 square miles. In addition to Victoria, there are offices in Harlingen, McAllen, Corpus Christi and Laredo. It serves more than 12,000 girls and about 2,500 adult volunteers from diverse ethnic, linguistic, and socio economic backgrounds.

  • I am so sorry to hear that your family is in turmoil over winning the lottery. Your brother could have waited until your fathers passing to make this change. Many people wish they could be blessed with winning, but do they really understand what could happen. My parents always tried to express to me that happiness comes from within. Your brother probably wasn't happy before he won the lotto. Remember, what goes around, comes around. Someday he may see he didn't live up to his promise.

  • I would just like to comment on this story that you wrote about The Girl Scout complex buildings. These so called buildings were once homes.I am not knocking the Girl scouts or you by no means. These homes were given to my dad. These house were given to by the man who gave these houses to the girl scouts. The man who gave these houses to my dad were his son.Which is who I`m describing.I just want you to understand that he told my dad he could stay there till he died,my dad has not died.If you are not aware but the man you wrote about giving the houses at a discounted price was a lottery winner. My family and myself were very disappointed, when we read this article. He took my dad out of these home were my dad was very content to live the rest of his life there, but my brother was not happy seeing my dad happy,so he took out and moved him else where. My uncle offered to buy these hommes so my dad could stay there, but he refused to sell even at his asking price and not a discounted price. I could go on and on about his actions, not just towards his dad,but also our mother. You should maybe consider doing a story on the curse of the lottery, right here in our own back yard.My brother has everybody thinking he is doing good deeds for the people in needbut refuses to do the good deed for his father and mother.Thank you! If any questions you may want to ask please feel free to call me at (361-652-0180)
