Editor, the Advocate:

Discipline in our schools has been raised as a campaign issue. Mr. Moore recognized this issue long ago and has already taken action. As an involved parent I have had the pleasure of serving on the VISD Discipline Committee since it's inception in 2007. This summer, training will begin with Safe and Civil Schools, which is a foundation for discipline that will help transform our district.

It is my hope, in order to keep the current momentum, you will re-elect Tami Keeling. She has done an exceptional job as a board member and devoted countless hours to help make change. Always putting education first she values teachers, and has been a strong proponent of smaller learning environments. She has been involved, engaged and highly effective.

Most importantly Tami has been a big part of the current VISD progress.

Your vote does count lets keep Tami Keeling on the school board.

Lisa Campbell

  • tomtom you're right on...that's why I also think uniforms are important. There is a reason why uniforms are required in the military and on sports teams and it's not only to tell one team apart from the other. It has to do with discipline and feeling like you're a part of a group. Adults have to observe strict dress codes when we are in the workforce. I have to wear business dress everyday if I want to succeed in my line of work...This is only one of the issues I agree with Tammy Keeling about...

  • I wonder how we got to this state, would it be all the law suit filing, socialist politician supporting, my little Johnny does nothing wrong, lay around on their rear parents who are not evolved in their child’s life now reaping what they have sown. The shame of it is the hard working, “Conservative” , involved in their children’s lives parents sat on their rear points of contact and did not run for office and or support folks who would not have “sold then down the river”.

Evil prevails when good men do nothing.

When my Sons were little we moved into a new neighborhood after I got out of the Army. Two little boys pushed one of my Sons down called him names, “honky”. I almost lost my presences of mind and asked them where their father was.. I was going to talk to him.. I stopped because I knew they did not have a clue.. did not even know who he was….

My boys never wanted another man in our community to talk to me about their behavior in public. Inappropriate behavior meant a sudden extreme rise in temperature of the flesh on their back side.

  • Busymom,
I believe what you are asking is why doesn’t the current school board enforce the zero tolerance policy anymore? Did they create a “Discipline Committee” to replace zero tolerance?

  • Based on statements expressed in the League of Women Voter's forum, neither candidiate in this election supports zero-tolerance. Ms Keeling is for changing the current dress code to eliminate any gray area and Mr Jaynes is for enforcing the one we have. The dress code problem could be avoided if parents actually put their foot down and at the same time, pull their kids pants up! I'm with you on the thug thing. The other day I dropped my son off at school and two boys in front of us exited their car, each of them with probation ankle braclets. Why aren't these kids at Mitchell instead of being included in the general population? It was disturbing. The discipline and dress code policies need an overhaul and hopefully the program mentioned in Ms Campbell's article above will address such issues.

  • busymombutlovinit,
I don't know who you are, but if you run for school board, you got my vote. We need more of you and less of the politicians. Hang in there and God Bless.

  • I believe we need to have a major over haul in our schools. What ever hapened to the "zero tollerance" policy? Do any of you out there have children that go to Patti Welder? Children who attend this school have the right to go to a safe school, not all of us out there have the option of private school. Special ed children are not welcomed in private schools. I have tried, if you have a special kid, you are up a creek!!! I don't understand why it is so hard to get the little thugs out of our schools. Tell these kids to pull up their pants, wear the appropriate size clothing, and keep their hands off their mid section!!!
We also need to have teachers and board members whos kids actually attend the schools they serve!
