Editor, the Advocate:

On numerous occasions while walking my leashed dog on a public sidewalk, I have had irresponsible dog owners toss their dogs out the front door for a potty break. The latest incident happened this evening when two well-coifed miniature schnauzers, weighing all of maybe 10 pounds each, decided to race across the street and come after my 65-pound English Setter.

To the owner of these dogs, you obviously care enough about your dogs to ensure they have regular grooming appointments and are nicely accessorized. Would you please care enough about them to ensure they do not get hit by a car or injured when a dog not as well trained and tempered as mine decides to defend themselves and their owner? You have a fenced yard — please use it.

We have an ordinance which disallows the free roaming of one's dogs — aka a leash law.

Article IV. Care and control of animals:

Sec. 4-40. Offenses.

(a) It shall be unlawful for an owner of an animal to fail to exercise control over such animal to prevent it from threatening, chasing or attacking passing persons, vehicles or other animals.

Everyone, please be a responsible dog owner and do not allow your dog to roam loose, even if you think it is just out in your own front yard.

  • Animal control is not going to drive around looking for loose dogs...if you see a violation, call them.

  • AMEN! Wonder how often the leash law is actually enforced in Victoria? My guess would be fewer than the fingers on one hand and yet I know the daily abuse of this law would be staggering in numbers if it could be counted. Responsible Pet Ownership: a necessity for every pet owner.
