Editor, the Advocate:
The language of today used by the youth, especially high school level, is outstandingly rude. The way other students speak to each other is more than crude. There was a time when men were to use cordial language when in the company of women. Now, I overhear both sexes calling each other every word in the book. Even more awe striking is the fact that these are used as terms of endearment! Are you kidding? It seems to me that kids can’t come up with a synonym for a word that tends to marry with “What the....” I feel everyone reading this can fill in that famous four-letter word with no problem.
I sit in class every day. I’m at the high school and hear this word more than enough. It makes the user seem horribly uneducated and ignorant. That is strictly an opinion, but one that is undoubtedly shared. No matter the context, this word will always be tacky, unrefined, low-grade, tasteless, trashy, unbecoming, sleazy, cheap and is always inappropriate when used away from the comfort of your own home.
You guys do not fit any of those adjectives above. Your word choice simply gives that facade. I have yet to meet a kid I didn’t like. Their words might have not been my favorite, but, guys, get real. That talk isn’t going to fly in a business atmosphere. And it certainly won’t make a big impression on a guy or girl you might have your eye on.

"And in the business world, places with good jobs will not put up with that language used freely."
LOL. Not according to my friends who worked at Chase in NYC. The accountants were the worst. I guess that's why they kept them locked up and busy for 19 hours a day.
May 23, 2008 at 9:34 a.m.Good one--Horn!!
May 22, 2008 at 5:19 p.m.Wow! Now I'm a liberal! Makes a fella wanna cry like Popeye.
May 22, 2008 at 5:15 p.m.I don't smoke.......not on welfare, ....never have been.....don't cuss like a sailor. ..OH MY LORD!!!! I'm a CONSERVATIVE!!!!! loading my revolver.....
May 22, 2008 at 5:11 p.m.Smoking ,cussing and welfare is liberal?????
May 22, 2008 at 2:48 p.m.Kind of like smoking Observer. You want to smoke, do it so no one who doesn't want to can smell it can and it's okay with us and if you get sick from it you pay for your own medical $$$.
If you want to use the ---- words do it away from people like my wife who don't like it and it's okay with us. And if it keeps you from getting or keeping that job then it's on you as long as stay away from my welfare tax $$$.
That's the true old style liberal way.
May 22, 2008 at 11:52 a.m.Kate you give me hope for the future...can't wait till my son tries this language around me...he will regret it.
May 22, 2008 at 8:49 a.m.Kate, you are one young lady to be proud of yourself. A breath of fresh air.
My wife of almost 35 years will NOT put up with such language and will speak out to the person to watch their language if it is spoken and I am sure you do also. We have two sons and believe me they have not ever nor do they have respect for girls who use such language.
And guys, I know the guy thing and all, but when lady's and others out of the circle are around it is proper to take note and adjust. Might be your daughter one of these days.
And in the business world, places with good jobs will not put up with that language used freely.
May 22, 2008 at 8:30 a.m.Kate, It is very refreshing to hear a "modern teenager" speaking like a "young lady"! You have obviously a lot of self-esteem and respect for yourself. You will go far in life. Unfortunately, what you say is true. I have a 17 y/0 and the words that come out of her mouth are enough to make a sailor blush! What is worse though, is the utter lack of respect young adults have for their elders, teachers, parents, each other and themselves.
