PORT LAVACA — Police suspect a 28-year-old woman was drinking before she died in a car crash on County Road 101, early Monday morning.

Raquel Carrera Reyes, of Port Lavaca, died after her Dodge Stratus went into a ditch and hit a concrete drainage pipe just north of Pierkert Road.

There is no evidence Reyes tried to stop the car, Sgt. Joshua Smith said.

“It was a pretty hard impact,” Smith said.

Police are investigating the wreck, he said.

The inside of the car smelled like alcohol when police arrived shortly after midnight, he said. There’s also evidence Reyes was driving home from a bar, Smith said.

“We’ve had our share of alcohol-related offenses,” over the holiday weekend, Smith said.

In Victoria, there didn’t seem to be an increase of alcohol-related arrests over the holiday weekend, Sgt. Eline Moya said.

People understand there are more officers on the streets looking for drunk drivers, Moya said.

“They see the presence of the officers, out on the street,” Moya said.

Officers made two driving- while-intoxicated arrests Sunday, according to arrest reports. Both of the men arrested had driven drunk at least twice before, the report said.

Police arrested a 51-year-old man on suspicion of public intoxication after he stumbled in front of a car on the 800 block of Stayton Street on Sunday.

Deputies arrested a 45-year-old man on the same charges after he walked into traffic on State Highway 185, just south of Highway 59 on Sunday.

  • I didn't realize who she was until I went to "The Store" and saw her picture on this memorial fund jar. She was always so sweet and would smile at my kids , when they were being bad in the store. Her family will be in my prayers.

  • I heard about this story through word of mouth, but never recognized the name "Raquel Reyes". But, after seeing it in the paper, I realize, I went to school with "Raquel Carrera", ate lunch with her everyday during Junior/Senior year. I am shocked to hear that she is no longer with us, she will be missed. My condolences to her family and especially her son.
