Madison Simpson, the region’s contestant in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, is making the most of her time in Washington, D.C., while waiting to hear the results of the bee’s first phase.

Madison, a 13-year-old seventh grader at Cuero Junior High, competed in the bee’s written test of 50 words Monday and will find out how she did on Thursday.

“Some words were easy, some were tough,” Madison said. “They only count 25 of the 50, but we’re not sure which ones those are.”

All spellers will get the chance to spell one word on stage Thursday before the quarterfinals start that afternoon.

“I just keep on going,” Madison said. “I guess I’m not too worried about winning.”

On Tuesday, all the spellers and their families enjoyed a barbecue lunch and games at Turkey Run Park on the Potomac River.

The Simpsons also walked through the capitol, seeing the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the White House, even catching a glimpse of First Lady Laura Bush.

“We didn’t know it, but the first lady was driving by with all the police cars,” said Rosalie Simpson, Madison’s mother. “We all waved at her. It was such a surprise. We’ve had a great time. We’ve already done so much, but I don’t think we’ll see a fourth of the city this week.”

Madison said she has enjoyed the trip and plans on going on a tour of the Smithsonian museums today.

She missed her school’s awards ceremony Tuesday, but found out she is one of the top four students in her class.

  • Congrats to Madison on making it to DC and for receiving the award locally! I'm sure her parents are so proud that they could just burst!
