POINT COMFORT – A proposed $140 million facility may increase revenue for the Calhoun County Port Authority.
Excalibur Processing LLC is in negotiations with the Calhoun Port Authority to bring a hydrocarbons processing facility to the Port Lavaca/Point Comfort peninsula, port director Charles Hausmann confirmed.
The project has been discussed for almost a year now and Excalibur accepted an option to lease property for one year, until the end of February 2009, Hausmann said.
If the project goes through, it would bring in more revenue for the port and could create jobs for the community, he said.
“It would bring in lots of dollars with maintenance contract employees and affiliate employees,” Arlene Marshall, president of the Calhoun County Economic Development Corp., said. “As the dollar expands for one job, there are usually about four that are affected.”
He predicts the facility would bring 42 jobs and 20 to 30 construction jobs for 12 to 15 months.
The splitting-chemical processing plant is in the engineering and drawing stage, M.A. Taghizadeh, one of the managing partners, said. The facility would be built on an area of about 26 acres.
The next step is to have the plans approved by the state, which Taghizadeh said shouldn’t be a problem.
“We have zero air emissions,” he added.
The facility would split condensate, the high-grade part of crude oil, from Calhoun County to produce three different types of product to be sold to different refineries, he said.
“We will be bringing so much cargo from overseas – the port will be getting lots of fees on that,” Taghizadeh said. “It’s almost a $1.2 billion operation.”
The company plans to open an office in either Port Lavaca or Point Comfort. Taghizadeh hopes to help the community with housing and by training residents.
