Editor, the Advocate:
Mayor Will Armstrong has come out decrying the indictments of Dave Smith and Bruce Ure as being politically motivated. If that is what we are to all believe, we are truly missing the point.
What this is all about is how our judicial system works.
The DA’s office works with local law enforcement to investigate suspected criminal activity, regardless of whether it involves public or private individuals. Evidence is turned over to a grand jury so as to determine if there is sufficient cause to submit cases to a jury trial.
It appears to me that the system of checks and balances within our judicial system is working rather well on the local level. As uncomfortable and unpleasant as it has been to witness the unfolding of the events of recent months, the public deserves a full account within a court of law before an impartial jury, so we may be able to properly determine the guilt or innocence of the involved parties.
The proper thing for our politicians at city hall to do is to distance themselves from the situation to avoid any alleged conflict of interest or unwanted political fallout. Terminating Dave Smith, especially in view of the questionable circumstances of his “retirement,” could only be deemed proper.
Suspending the police chief with pay would be acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, without putting the city in the position of being judge and jury by suspending him without pay as some suggest.
Our mayor and council members need to show true courage and leadership at this difficult time, instead of trying to preserve the good ol’ boy network and playing politics.

Obviously Tom does not know CC very well. It has been a corrupt place for decades.
Bet he didn't know the girlfriend thing either.
Best of luck in Nueces County

tomtom,
When you find a place for your girl friend where all is "sweetness and light", please do everyone a favor and post it's location - I'm sure lotsa people will want to move there.
