AUSTIN - The East Bernard Brahmarettes found themselves in a very unfamiliar situation Thursday, but recovered just in time to continue their history-making season.
Samantha Wasek’s single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning brought home two runs as East Bernard overcame a rare early deficit to beat Harmony 2-1 in the Class 2A semifinals at McCombs Field.
“I wanted to do whatever it took not to lose,” said Wasek, who lined a single to right-center field that got past Harmony right fielder Madison Buckner and rolled all the way to the wall.
East Bernard, which is in the state tournament for the first time, improved to 29-4-1 and advanced to face Coahoma (33-9) in Saturday's 11 a.m. championship game. Coahoma beat S&S Consolidated 1-0 in Thursday’s other semifinal. Harmony finished the season with a 36-10 record.
Courtney Repka (29-4-1) threw a one-hitter and allowed just one hit out of the infield while striking out 12. Her fielding error and a throwing error by catcher Liz Reyes led to Harmony's run in the third inning and ended Repka's scoreless inning streak at 30.
“I think it was scary for them,” East Bernard coach Amy Bush said of her team’s 1-0 deficit. “I don’t think they had ever had someone score first on them.”
The Brahmarettes’ two-out comeback began when Buckner dropped Liz Reyes’ line drive. After Haley Dawson drew a walk from Samantha Matulis, Wasek, who was 2-for-4, lined a 1-1 pitch to right field to score Reyes with the tying run. Buckner lost her footing after over-running the ball and Dawson raced home with the game-winning run.
“We were hitting the ball hard the whole game,” Bush said. “They were just making the plays and we weren't able to put our hits together.”
