Yoakum football official Larry West has been chosen by the Texas Association of Sports Official as the referee for the H-E-B. Kickoff Classic to be held Aug. 30 in San Antonio.
West will officiated the Katy-San Antonio Reagan contest beginning at noon in the Alamodome.
“To be chosen by TASO is truly an honor,” said West, who will be starting his 26th season as an official. “It is surely a career highlight for me, and I look forward to working with others across the state in this classic.”
West, who works as a paramedic engineer in the Victoria Fire Department, has logged over 287 varsity contests during his career and with the addition of sub-varsity, junior high and youth games, he has worked over 1,000 games.
West began is officiating career in 1983 with the Permian-Basin Chapter. He has also called in the Austin, Rice Belt (Bay City) and Victoria chapters and since 2001 has been a member of the San Antonio TASO chapter.
“Preparation, including staying in shape and knowledge of the rules, along with on-field positioning and properly communicating with coaches and kids, is the key to having a good game,” West said.
