Joseph Peña will need to hitch a ride to his sister’s high school graduation and then commute to his job next week with a co-worker.

He’s relieved, though, that his truck suffered more scratches than he did.

Peña, a 20-year-old Goliad man, rolled his 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 mid-morning on Friday.

“I came around the curve a little too fast,” he said.

Peña drove 50 miles per hour, or about 20 miles per hour greater than the speed limit.

He rolled his truck on the U.S. Highway 77 off-ramp, which steeply curves downward near U.S. Highway 59 South – the road to Goliad.

The truck, which plowed through a road sign, toppled to its driver’s side. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Peña was shaken but did not require medical help. Trooper Clayton Sullivan did not ticket him, Peña said.

Peña, who commutes from Goliad to Bloomington for work in a refinery, was headed to Three Rivers, a Texas town just hours south of Victoria.
