HOUSTON – Gino Matias scored on a fielder’s choice in the top of the ninth and St. John’s beat Texas 2-1 in the first round of the Houston regional Friday.
Matias, who got on when his roller back to the mound ended with a muffed toss to first, scored the go-ahead run on a grounder by Jeff Grantham. Colin Lynch (4-1) then retired three straight in the bottom of the inning for the victory.
Texas reliever Cole Green (3-6) went three innings and allowed an unearned run on two hits. He struck out three.
Texas (37-21) took a 1-0 lead in the second when David Hernandez’s single drove in Brandon Belt. St. John’s (42-14) tied the game in the third with the help of a pair of walks and two infield ground outs.
Texas starter Kenn Kasparek allowed four hits and five walks over his six innings, striking out four.
Red Storm starter Scott Barnes went 7 2/3 innings and allowed one run on six hits. He struck out four and walked only one.
Houston 9, Dallas Baptist 5
COLLEGE STATION – Ryan Lormand’s double in the eighth inning scored the go-ahead run for Houston in a 9-5 win over Dallas Baptist in the first round of the College Station regional.
Lormand’s double scored Jimmy Cesario for the first of three runs in the eighth for Houston (40-22). The Cougars had trailed early after Trevor Head’s three-run homer for Dallas Baptist in the first.
Lormand and Cesario each had four hits for the Cougars, and Houston reliever Chase Dempsay (7-3) pitched 2 innings of one-hit relief.
Ryan Enos tied the game at 5 in the seventh for Dallas Baptist (37-18) with a solo homer in the seventh.
Houston will face the winner of the Texas A&M-Illinois-Chicago game Saturday. Dallas Baptist will face the loser.
Wichita State 8, TCU 5
STILLWATER, Okla. – Andy Dirks and Clinton McKeever each hit three-run home runs and Rob Musgrave limited the damage when TCU’s sluggers went deep to lead Wichita State to a win in the opening game of the Stillwater Regional.
Dirks hit Tyler Lockwood’s first pitch after he’d beaned Kevin Hall over the wall in left field to give the second-seeded Shockers (45-15) a 3-1 lead in the third inning. He also singled and scored on McKeever’s three-run shot to left-center off Lockwood (7-2) to extend the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
Musgrave (11-1) gave up two home runs to Matt Carpenter and one apiece to Chris Ellington and Matt Vern, but all of them were solo shots.
Musgrave gave up eight hits and didn’t walk anyone in his sixth complete game of the season. The 6-foot-2 senior struck out four and won his seventh straight decision.
Lockwood (7-2) gave up all eight runs on 10 hits and left after yielding a single to McKeever and a Dusty Coleman’s second double of the game to start the eighth inning. Both came around to score as the Shockers pushed their lead to 8-4 before Ellington homered in the ninth.
