Nerves shouldn’t be a problem for East Bernard in today’s Class 2A softball state championship game.

According to Brahmarettes coach Amy Bush, all her team’s nerves were probably shot in Thursday’s thrilling 2-1 semifinal victory over Harmony.

“I’ve been part of a lot of sports in my life, but that was probably the biggest thing I’ve been a part of ever,” Bush said of Samantha Wasek’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh that sent East Bernard (29-4-1) into today’s 11 a.m. final against Coahoma (33-9).

The Brahmarettes are hoping to win a state title in their first trip to the tournament. Coahoma has made 10 state tournament appearances and is looking for its second title. The Bulldogettes won it all in 1998.

But chances are Coahoma hasn’t faced a pitcher like East Bernard’s 6-foot-2 Courtney Repka, who hasn’t surrendered an earned run in 35 innings.

It appeared Thursday that Repka’s one-hitter would go for naught until Wasek’s walk-off hit.

“I kept looking up at the scoreboard and I know our players did, too, and I was wondering how we were losing that game,” Bush said.

East Bernard went through a workout Friday before heading back up to Austin.

“Thursday was very special,” Bush said. “Now we’re off to get the next one.”

Texarkana Liberty-Eylau 2, Medina Valley 1

Lacey Middlebrooks pitched a one-hit complete game as Texarkana Liberty-Eylau upset defending Class 3A champion Medina Valley.

Middlebrooks struck out 10 and shortstop Ashlee Johnson scored both runs as the Leopards (24-3-1) advance to the finals against Huntington, a winner Thursday night over Burkburnett.

Nederland 1, Dripping Springs 0

A wild pitch in the first inning scored the only run and Caitlin Austin made it hold up with a dominating performance on the mound, sending Nederland to a win over Dripping Springs in the Class 4A softball semifinals.

Nederland (30-9-1) scored the only run after loading the bases with an infield hit, a catcher’s interference, a sacrifice bunt and a hit batter. After striking out the next two hitters, Dripping Springs pitcher Paige Sandahl threw a ball behind the batter, allowing Nederaland’s Ashleigh Kuhn to score.

Aledo 6, Waco Midway 0

Pitcher Whitney Canion remained undefeated on the season with another dominating performance, leading Aledo to a win over Waco Midway in the Class 4A state softball semifinals.

Canion improved to 30-0-1 with a two-hit complete game, striking out seven and walking one.
