Thumbs up

Thumbs up to the Howell Middle School Band Department. The Spring Concert 2008 at The Victoria College Auditorium on May 20 was a very entertaining, impressive and a job well done. Kudos to all the band members and their instructors.

Thumbs up for the enlarged print in the Stocks of Local Interest. It is a major improvement and I hope you will continue this.

Thumbs Up to Victoria Advocate employees Kim Herbst and Jennifer Reckaway for going out of their way with hometown customer service in helping me meet a deadline for my son’s graduation photo. Keep up the good work.

Thumbs up to Taco Bell for their new menu. This is the only place that makes a product with lower prices and tastes great! Try their new cheese roll-ups for only 79 cents.

To the unidentified good Samaritan who helped one of our reporters push his stalled car out of a busy Victoria intersection on Wednesday morning.

Thanks!

Thumbs down

Thumbs down to the people complaining about high gas prices. Consider the cost of a six or 12 pack of beer; one package of 20 cigarettes; or bottled water, etc. Put it in perspective, folks.

Thumbs Down to the “Mutts” cartoon. It’s pathetic. Why not bring “B.C.” back in the daily as well as Sunday?

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up for Dennis Paine Jr., Rafael DeLaGarza IV, Billy Bernard and Jimmy McDonald, who had the tenacity and desire to stick with the rigorous classroom work at Victoria College Police Academy and graduate, bringing themselves closer to their dream of serving our community as police officers.

Thumbs up to the increase in minimum wage for the first time in almost a decade. The raise to $6.55 per hour next month and another increase to $7.25 a year from now should bring some financial relief to many of our hardest-working people.

Thumbs up for the life of film director Sydney Pollack, who was responsible for “Tootsie,” one of the funniest of movies, and “Out of Africa,” perhaps the most beautiful visual movie of our time. Mr. Pollack died last Monday after a fight with cancer. He was 73.

Thumbs up to all the veterans and other citizens who showed up at cemeteries and at De Leon Plaza on Memorial Day to pay tribute to all the Americans who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Thumbs up for Jami Lobpries, a Wharton High School graduate who helped her Texas A&M softball team to a great season and a a trip to the College Softball World Series.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down once again to the onset of blazing temperatures, high humidity and dearth of rain parching the South Texas ground, with summer officially still three weeks away.

Thumbs down on the deadly highways of South Texas, as the Memorial Day weekend produced fatalities and injuries to drivers from our region.
