Three area teachers have been selected to participate in “From Disunion to Empire: The United States, 1850­1900,” a summer institute sponsored by Humanities Texas and Trinity University in June on the Trinity campus in San Antonio. Doug Kubicek, Hallettsville Junior High School; Jessica Griffith, Crain Middle School, Victoria; and John Bednarczyk, Howell Middle School, Victoria, will be among the 42 teachers from across Texas participating in lectures and workshops that examine U.S. history and Texas history in the second half of the 19th century.

Dan Jaeckle, a University of Houston-Victoria professor of humanities and English, recently was named 2008-09 president of the UHV Faculty Senate, an elected group that represents faculty members at the university. Members of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee will be Cindy Schnebly, vice president; Nagarajan Ramamoorthy, past president; Jonathan Du, secretary; Diane Prince, School of Education & Human Development; and Jay Dune, School of Nursing. Senators of the Faculty Senate will be Bud Fairlamb and Mel Damodaran, School of Arts & Sciences; Ron Sardessai and Joseph Ben-Ur, School of Business Administration; Roy Foley and Tim Berkey, School of Education & Human Development; and Dune.

Margery Engel Loeb, president of Loeb & Associates, recently had an article, “A Guiding Vision Inspires Family Business Stakeholders,” published in the Family Business Shareholder’s Handbook. The handbook, from the publisher of Family Business Magazine, gives tips and strategies for effective ownership and stewardship for family companies.

Randy and Erick Pollard from L-Ann Imaging in Victoria recently attended a week-long continuing education seminar for professional photographers in College Station. Randy studied “mastering the techniques” with wedding photographer Hanson Fong from San Francisco, and Erick worked side-by-side with Jim Cunningham from Arkansas, teaching digital painting enhancement techniques. The annual school is sponsored by the Texas Professional Photographers Association.

Bob Hesse, a financial advisor for Edward Jones, was one of several of the firm’s more than 9,000 advisors recently honored at a business management forum in St. Louis. Hesse was recognized for his business management skills, to share ideas and expand his knowledge in retirement planning and estate considerations.

Paula Cobler recently was promoted to communications manager at the University of Houston-Victoria. Cobler previously worked as a writer in the Marketing Department. In her new position, Cobler coordinates UHV’s communications and public relations efforts.
