While most seniors at Memorial High School will be attending the Vipers playoff game on Friday night, Laura Campbell will be conducting a benefit concert for Darfur.

The Save Darfur Benefit concert was initiated by the high school senior and the school's Foreign Exchange Club to help the victims of genocide in Darfur, a region in Sudan, Africa.

After reading the book "The Translator: A Tribesman's Memoir of Darfur" by Daoud Hari, Laura began to contemplate how a benefit concert would help the victims.

"I discussed how we could help these people who have little of nothing left," Laura said.

The book tells Hari's story about the raids and deaths he saw. The book motivated Laura and her friends who decided the money from the concert could help the residents of Darfur.

"This isn't about our group, it's about the people of Darfur and how their human rights have been stripped from them."

The benefit concert will be at the main gym at MHS and all proceeds will go to help the people of Darfur.

"This concert is really important so we can help the refugees of Darfur," Samantha Gregory, senior at MHS, said. "They can really use our help."

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and four local musicians will serve as the entertainment.

"This is a way for the people of Victoria to get involved and help someone in another country," Samantha said.

In the western region of Sudan, Africa up to 300,000 people have died and more than 2 million have fled their homes since 2003 because of rebellions.

The conflict started after a rebel group began attacking government targets, saying the region was being neglected by Khartoum, another region in Sudan. The people of Darfur have been subject to genocide.

Laura Campbell, senior at Memorial High School and the Foreign Exchange Club will have a benefit concert. Proceeds will be sent to Darfur to help the victims of genocide.
