KINGSVILLE - After two years of being eliminated in the area playoffs, the Port Lavaca Calhoun Sandcrabs have finally broke through with their 48-28 victory over the Edcouch-Elsa Yellow Jackets Friday at Javelina Stadium.

And it came against the team that eliminated them two years ago.

"Some of our players were here two years ago for that game," Calhoun coach Richard Whitaker said. "We read their paper down there and they showed us no respect. These kids weren't leaving this field without being victorious. This is the biggest win in Calhoun football history."

The Sandcrabs came back from deficits of 14-0 and 21-14 before scoring the last 20 points of the game to break a 28-28 tie.

Calhoun outscored Edcouch-Elsa 34-7 in the second half, including putting up 21 points in the third quarter.

The last three minutes of that quarter was filled with big plays by both teams.

The Sandcrabs took their first lead of the game, 28-21, on a 19-yard run by James Ezzell.

That was answered less than a minute later by a 63-yard pass from Erik Nino to Roger Garcia to retie the game.

Calhoun delivered the final blow of the quarter with a 76-yard run by Xavier Archangel gave the Sandcrabs the lead for good on the next play from scrimmage. The run was his second score of the game of over 70 yards.

"We thought we had got the momentum back when we tied it," Edcouch-Elsa coach Joe Solis said. "That 76-yard run was a back breaker."

Edcouch-Elsa ends the year at 11-1 while the Sandcrabs went to 9-1 and will face the winner of the Pflugerville Hendrickson and Schertz Clemens matchup.

The Yellow Jackets looked like they were going to make the game a blowout in the early going. On their third play from scrimmage, Nino connected with Garcia for a 67-yard pass that led to a Nino one-yard touchdown run that put Edcouch-Elsa up 7-0 less than three minutes into the game.

Less than five minutes later, Garcia caught a three-yard pass from Nino to put the Yellow Jackets up 14-0.

Calhoun then forced Edcouch-Elsa into a missed field goal and immediately took advantage when Archangel ran 71 yards to put the Sandcrabs on the board and cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 14-7 to end the first quarter.

There was no scoring for over a quarter until Sterling Jones' four-yard scoring run for Calhoun with three minutes left in the first half tied the game at 14-14.

That play was set up by another big run by Archangel, this one a 68-yarder that gave the Sandcrabs a first-and-goal from the 10-yard line.

The Yellow Jackets went into halftime up, 21-14, thanks to two Sandcrab penalties. A personal foul penalty gave Edcouch-Elsa a first-and-goal opportunity and a defensive holding penalty on fourth down gave them a new set of downs from the two-yard line.

They took advantage of their new life with Nino finding Alex Cisneros in the back of the end zone with only eight seconds remaining until the intermission.

Rushing - Edcouch-Elsa - Alex Cisneros 2-5; Roger Garcia 4-7; Ismael Morales 1 (-1); Erik Nino 20-63; Calhoun - Xavier Archangel 13-293 yards; Daylan Bubenik 1- (-13); James Ezzell 17-93 yards; Sterling Jones 12-41 yards; Joseph Vaughn 1 (-3)

Passing - Edcouch-Elsa - , Nino 13-25, 206 ; Calhoun - Ezzell 3-5, 53

Receiving - Edcouch-Elsa - Cisneros 3-18 yards; Garcia 5-146 yards; Jessie Jalomo 4-36 yards; Morales1-6 yards; Calhoun - Bubenik 1-8; Lucas Haynes 2-45 yards.

  • Just thought I would everyone know who wanted to go to other games on Saturday. I have emailed and phoned the Alamodome. The tickets we buy from Calhoun WILL get you in to all 3 games. They are also allowing in and outs if you want to watch G-P, then leave and come back for Calhoun. You have to get stamped, though. Also, parking is not in and out. If you leave the parking lot, you have to repay $10 to get back in. Alamodome ph# 210-207-3663. I've called after hours and security told me the same thing the receptionist did.

    See everyone there.

    GO CRABS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey Crab Fans: Check out Dave Campbell's "Game Ball's of the Week Awards" Calhoun got Ball #1 thanks to Xavier and Beeville got Game Ball #3 for beating Calallen.

I've known Richard Barton all my life...but I never would have guessed.

  • omg...tstorm....didn't know you were a Crab and way back in 54? My dad was a coach for the Crabs but not until 60 & 61...I bet even he doesn't know this one....but I am dying to find out who it is....  My guess is probably wrong but I'll guess V. Lambden?

    November 25, 2008 at 1:13 p.m.
  • OK Danrut101...I check out the guys on the Statesman...are you sure they are the sportscasters?...sounded more like the weathercasters. I am not surprised about their picks though...sure they are going to pick the teams from their area....I bet ole Don Brubaker would pick differently. At least they gave a bit of insight on this team....great defense but not much offense....I am guessing that all they know about the Crabs is what they said...the name of the team and the school....we've got both barrels loaded. So far it sounds like it could very well be a Sandcrab Saturday Night. GO CALHOUN!

    November 25, 2008 at 1:11 p.m.
  • Hey Sandcrab fans, don't forget to see our boys off on Saturday at noon along Virginia Street. Bring your noisemakers and claws, let's show these guys we are behind them 100%! I'll be hooting and hollering and then I plan to get in line behind their bus and follow them all the way to the Dome. GO SANDCRABS!

    November 25, 2008 at 10:53 a.m.
  • Hey guys,

If you wanna see who the statesman.com is picking to win the games, go to this site and view their very ignorant sportscaster pick the games.

  • Rage...sounds like a full weekend of some really great football. My aunt and uncle have lived in Ennis since the 60's and the Lions have always been a great team. I was surprised to see though that they were not ranked higher then they were this year. I do know that Pflugerville wanted to play on Friday and didn't want to play Calhoun in the Dome because we have played there twice and won BIG both times...unfortunantly they lost the coin toss. I don't think either team should go in this game with overconfidence of an easy win though...but I sure hope we are the ones who will be moving on. If you get to SA come to our game...it will be crowded and LOUD...the Sandcrabs have been all the talk in town so I know that Crab Nation will shut down the town and be in the stands on Saturday night.

    November 25, 2008 at 12:25 a.m.
  • Anyone heard much about the team that Beeville is playing?

    November 24, 2008 at 5:15 p.m.
  • Word out in our local paper site...dad of Pfl-Hen band member says that the school has only had a varsity team for 4 years...and they are new to the playoffs. Scouts commented on their defense...but Crabs have answers as well...sounds like the two teams are fairly close in their game style so it should be a good game. Can't afford to take any game or team as a "easy win" at this point in the game.....that way of thinking has to be one of the big factors in EE not being as ready for the Crabs as they should have been. The Hawks fans have been very classy in their posts and it is always nice to play teams who display good sportsmanship. That said....LET'S GO SANDCRABS!

Crab fans....don't worry about getting rooms right by the dome....the SA bus and trolley system are cheap, nice, and run frequently....also the Taxi's are reasonable. We stayed over by the Mercado during IKE and could walk to the River Walk, Alamo, and Dome...within blocks.

    November 24, 2008 at 5:13 p.m.
  • Try www.hotels.com
Red Roof Inn located right under I10 across from the Dennys next to the Marriott Rivercenter. Walking distance to Alamodome. 63.99 But yall better hurry their gonna go fast.

    November 24, 2008 at 3:40 p.m.
  • tstorm...oops, u r right!

Then its almost to late for hotel rooms. Christmas River Parade Friday night as well. Roads/exits will be blocked. Get ready to walk...250k people will be on the river.

    November 24, 2008 at 1:55 p.m.
  • Pflugerville is a running team. They attempted 10 passes last week and completed 6. Their highest in both categories all season. Supposedly they have a good defense, but Shertz moved the ball well on them but they fumbled 4 times in Pflugerville territory. It sounds like they are very similar to our CRABS. Should be a good game.

    November 24, 2008 at 1:13 p.m.
  • nope. but do go early and watch Lake Travis QB @ noon-ish game. He signed w/ 'Horns. They will win state barring a upset.

    November 24, 2008 at 12:58 p.m.
  • GO CRABS
does anyone know what pflugerville is ranked and are they a running team or a passing one

    November 24, 2008 at 12:32 p.m.
  • Rage...the statesman.com is the place to go for football chatter with Austin area including Pflugerville. Danrut and I have both posted there.

    November 24, 2008 at 5:27 a.m.
  • Danrut101: The Pflugerville Pflag is not available online..they advise refering to statesman.com for local news and sports.

    November 23, 2008 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Pflugervillians?
OK. That had me lol ( I don't know what they call themselves)

    November 23, 2008 at 5:18 p.m.
  • valleyfan...I have to agree that your post was a class act all the way. I hope you are infectious and spread your classy ways all through the EE fan base. I know that there are more than one of you already though....thanks so much and I hope the boys on your team hold up their heads with pride...they had a great season and did their school and community proud.

    November 23, 2008 at 5:08 p.m.
  • Pflugerville is outside of Austin right? Maybe in that paper...I know that they didn't want to play us in the dome because we have played there twice and come up big winners both times...so it would be interesting to know what they are saying. Let us know if you find out and I'll do the same.

    November 23, 2008 at 5:05 p.m.
  • Has anyone found out were Pflugervillians hang out? What forum do they chat on? Like to go see what they are saying. The only one I found is statesman.com. But not much going on there.

    November 23, 2008 at 5:02 p.m.
  • There are plenty of hotels near the Alamodome in the downtown area. 410/I35 area I can't think of any decent hotel that I would even consider staying. Calhoun fans need to make their reservations asap in order to stay at the better hotels closer to the dome. Go Sandcrabs, I will be rooting for y'all!

    November 23, 2008 at 4:01 p.m.
  • As far as the chant, it was probably CALHOUN ---- SANDCRABS, over and over. As far as the coach yelling at one of the players, I'm not sure, but I would assume it was because he was trying to fire them up after one of you guys big plays. We had several missed assignments. One was on the 3rd play of the game and another in the 3rd quarter. Our defense played good, and take away 2 or 3 plays and they would have played awesome. Thanks for the compliments and good luck to your Jackets next season. Maybe we could meet again and develop a good playoff rivalry.

    November 23, 2008 at 10:10 a.m.
  • Good Luck in the next round Calhoun. The outcome on Friday night did not surprise me. I just have a few questions.

Your coaches were yelling at one of our players in the third quarter. I had never seen that in a football game. What exactly happened?

Also, your fans had a chant late in the game. I think I heard "GET CONTROL". What was that all about?

Good Luck to the Sandcrabs and Wildcats in the next round. Bring home a state title. Remain CLASSY. It makes it easy losing to you guys.

    November 23, 2008 at 9:48 a.m.
  • Thanks to the Corpus Christi Caller for providing their Saturday's news to the Victoria Advocate!
We will be there to support GP and Calhoun...Go District 30 4A.....and WAY TO GO SANDCRABS!!! What an awesome performance in Kingsville!

    November 23, 2008 at 8:47 a.m.
  • HEY CRAB NATION...you know we are a classy bunch...supporting our Crabs 100%. Saturday we play at the Alamodome at 8:00 and there is no doubt that we will once again fill half of the dome to support our Sandcrabs. You know these are the playoffs...and District 30 still has 3 teams in the running. That triples the chances of one of these fine teams to garnish that coveted State Title for our District. Since this is the playoffs it never hurts to follow our fellow teams.

So here's a thought....on Saturday at noon in the Alamodome one of our other district teams will be playing in their regional game...Gregory Portland. There has been lots of good lucks, congratulations, and well wishes from GP fans for our continued success in the playoffs. It would be great sportsmanship on our part...not to mention a class A move...if those of us going to the Calhoun game would also attend the GP game and back them. There are some of their fans who are planning on doing the same during our game. If nothing else both of these teams are tough and exciting teams to watch...so if your thing is Texas HS football it will be an exciting day all the way around.

LET'S GO CRAB NATION...LET'S GO CALHOUN SANDCRABS!

    November 23, 2008 at 2:06 a.m.
  • Danrut101: I just tell em the truth...either the can take it or they can leave it...but I hope most of them will take it as their fans need to at least respect their own team.

I agree with you...Coach opting to play the very fast and very capable X instead of Sterling who I am sure they were more focused on....gave us a huge advantage. I also think that EE was so sure it would be a repeat of the 2006 game, they did not give it their all and as a result came up surprised and short!

    LETS GO SANDCRABS!

    November 23, 2008 at 1:53 a.m.
  • CrabbyLady.....You sure are making friends on RGVSports.com.
Supposedly Pflugerville has a good front 7 with a good young Middle Linebacker. Quoting them "he is the best middle linebacker in 4A this year". I guess they haven't played against our #50. If the O-Line does as good a job next week as they did against a big front 7 from EE, we should at least be in the game. Coach was very right when he said at the Pep Rally that "they would be keying on #9. And we were going to give them a taste of #6." Hope to see more people at the Dome this Saturday than we had against Mercedes. GO CRABS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    November 22, 2008 at 10:24 p.m.
  • >

Don;t stay anywhere in the EAST side of SanA toward the 410/I35N interchange. Is alot of crime at the hotels and parking lot on your vehicle. IT has happen to us and several other Victoria friends of ours on differ ocassions.
    Security cameras didn't help us....

    November 22, 2008 at 9:18 p.m.
  • Danrut....scouts say it looks really good....but then again we don't want our Crabs to go into any game from here on with the attitude that EE had last night about it being a easy win. If they play like they did last night...and since they are at home in the dome.....they should do great.

    November 22, 2008 at 5:09 p.m.
  • I have the same confirmation from a realiable source from CCISD...

Saturday night...8:00pm...Alamodome. Book your room and

let's see "CRAB NATION" out in full.....I am pretty sure we can fit everyone in the county in the dome and still have room for anyone from Victoria and our other neighboring communities that wish to come on out for a great game.

THIS IS YOUR YEAR CALHOUN.....GO FOR THE GOLD AND MAKE IT HAPPEN! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU.

    November 22, 2008 at 5:01 p.m.
  • Does anyone know anything about Pflugerville? I have a friend that lives in Shertz and he said it was a huge upset that Pflugerville beat them. I asked what they did and he pretty much said that they had one run of about 65 yards and scored on that drive. Every time Shertz would put together a drive they fumbled it away in Pflugerville territory.
It will be a good game. You never know when teams get to this part of the playoffs, it's hard to really know how good anyone is. All I know is that Coach Whitaker deserves a lot of props as he kept EE off balance. It's good to see him open up with a few passes to back the defense up a bit. #6 was by far the fastest player on the field and we took advantage. Good job O-Line. Those were the biggest holes I've seen all year.

    GO CRABZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    November 22, 2008 at 4:39 p.m.
  • It is officially true that CHS will play at 8:00pm in the Alamodome as the home team.  I hope to see all of you there!

    November 22, 2008 at 4:03 p.m.
  • That is the word on the street...Pflugerville wanted to play on Friday night and did not want to play in the dome because Calhoun has played there twice and had over the top wins each time...so they tossed a coin and Calhoun won so the game is Saturday night at 8:00 pm in the Alamodome. This is not verified and I wouldn't look for any verification until Monday though.

Way to go Sandcrabs...we believe in you...and we knew you could do it.

Great job Crab Nation!.....Now let's all go rock the dome!

    November 22, 2008 at 4:02 p.m.
  • Anyone know for sure if we play in the Alamodome on Saturday night?

    November 22, 2008 at 1:36 p.m.
