Predictions on the weather are considered at best an educated guess, yet some say it is an exact science. On Dec. 13, I predict it will snow in Riverside Park and we will be singing "Let it snow" for the 12th Annual Christmas in the Park. The theme for this years' Christmas in the Park is "Winter Wonderland."

The snow is new this year, said Shane Simon, recreation manager for the Parks and Recreation Department. In addition to the snow, kids of all ages will have a chance to visit Santa, decorate cookies and drink hot chocolate.

Come visit Santa and have your picture taken for only $1. Other activities include assorted games with prizes, a Jenny Jump and did I mention cookies and hot chocolate. Cookies will be available for the whole family to decorate.

Activities are from 6 to 9 p.m. If you want to play in the snow it will cost $2 for 10 minutes of fun. Included with the snow is a hayride to the Winter Wonderland.

This wonderful event is made possible by our sponsors: Exelon, First Victoria, H-E-B and Wells Fargo. Come on out and enjoy some snow, cookies or a visit with Santa.

On Dec. 20, we will have the last Market Days of 2008 at DeLeon Plaza. If you are interested in securing a booth contact the Parks and Recreation Department at the number listed below.

If you have any questions about these events please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 361-485-3200 or visit the City's Web site at www.victoriatx.org.

Doug Cochran is the Director of Parks and Recreation for the Victoria Parks and Recreation Department. Contact him at 361-485-3200 or dcochran@victoriatx.org

  • My 7 year old attended this event in the park with a friend and they were so excited about it. I did have a suggestion...I was wondering if this event could be planned out and scheduled to take place on the first cold snap in December. If it's cooler outside there's a more Christmas feel to it all. It also could cut back on the slush factor. Just a thought.  Nonetheless, the event is a lovely idea.

  • Chit,

What are you talking about? It was not canceled. I got there about 6:30 and there were people everywhere. To bad the weather did not cooperate.

  • Great idea. Poor execution, not a great time. I drove through the park 3 times, in a line of other cars looking for this event. No lights,no signs, no guidance, nothing. The snow? LAME! A couple of teensy patches that were so packed by the time we got there it wasn't even fun. Oh, and it was half melted. This thing was so poorly executed, I honestly thought this was a first time thing!!! And here I find that it is the 12th one of these????? No wonder people in this town don't come out for events!
This could have been a wonderful event, if planned, publicized and executed properly! Instead, all Victoria got was some slush on the ground that they had to wait in line for an hour for. One piddly food booth, again, with a line like you wouldn't believe. Lukewarm chocolate.
Santa's Gazebo was cool, however. I loved how they did the area for that, it looked great. That and the fact that this was a great idea are the only positives about this one.

  • Well I don't mean to be harsh, BUT it was a waste of my gas driving out to riverside for the christmas in the park. We sat from 5:30ish thinking we were early enough and got us a great parking. signs up saying christmas in the park area. we waited and waited while everyone was also coming down stopping reading the sign LOOKING around and seeing a WHOLE lot of nothing. they drove off. i sat there JUST in case, with two excited kids wanting to see snow and santa until 6:15pm and finally gave up after the kids were getting cranky, upset, and tired. i think it would have been a very nice gesture to put a CANCLED sign out or something to notify all the people coming out. thanks anyways, MAYBE next year will be more organized.
