Refugio's Jourdan Ortiz made two big touchdown catches Saturday night. But the biggest catch he made in the Class 2A, Division II playoff game against the East Bernard didn't come from Bobcats quarterback Kyle Hendley.
Ortiz, who had nine receptions for 148 yards, picked off a Matt Stelzel pass late in the fourth quarter to preserve Refugio's 28-20 victory over the Brahmas that sent the top-ranked Bobcats (13-0) into next week's quarterfinals against Blanco (13-0).
"I just did what I had to do," said Ortiz, who had touchdown catches of 38 and 30 yards in the first quarter and also batted down three passes during East Bernard's last-gasp attempt in the final seconds of the game. "The defense really stepped up."
"Our defense did what they have been doing all year long," Refugio coach Jason Herring said after watching the Bobcats eliminate East Bernard from the playoffs for the second straight season. "All I know is we are one of eight teams in the state still playing."
Ortiz's touchdown catches from Hendley in the first quarter helped Refugio jump out to a 21-7 halftime lead. But East Bernard roared back in the third quarter to pull within 21-20.
Lance Crump, who rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns, scored on a 19-yard run on the Brahmas' first series of the second half cut Refugio's lead to 21-14.
Refugio then gave the Brahmas a short field to work with after Irving Fox was stopped a yard shy on a fake-punt run. East Bernard took over at the Bobcats' 36 and scored five plays later on Stelzel's 9-yard run. A bad snap on the PAT try enabled Refugio to cling to a 21-20 lead with 5:27 left in the third quarter.
But Terrence Smith's 39-yard run sparked a seven-play, 70-yard touchdown drive that put the momentum back on Refugio's sideline. Hendley lofted a cross-field screen pass to running back Charlie Henderson, who ran into the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown.
Refugio appeared headed toward another score before Henderson's fumble was recovered by East Bernard at the Brahmas' 38. But on third-and-10 from the Bobcats' 31, Ortiz intercepted Stelzel's pass to end East Bernard's threat.
The Brahmas, who finished the season with a 9-3 record, went up 7-0 when Crump raced 36 yards for a touchdown on East Bernard's second play from scrimmage. But Refugio, behind the strong arm of Hendley, reeled off 21 unanswered points before halftime.
Hendley completed 17 of 26 passes in the first half for 284 yards, including the touchdown passes to Ortiz that gave the Bobcats a 12-7 lead.
The Bobcats went 66 yards in 10 plays for another touchdown in the second quarter. Hendley, who finished the game 22 of 31 for 327 yards, was 6 of 7 for 70 yards on the drive that ended on backup quarterback Aaron Perez's 1-yard pass to wide receiver Irving Fox on fourth-and-goal.
Hendley moved Refugio 62 yards in 10 plays for an Eric Martinez 24-yard field goal just before half.

December 4, 2008 at 9:48 a.m.I was very disappointed in the photo that appeared in the Victoria Advocate after the Refugio-East Bernard game. The Refugio QB and the coach deserved better than that. That picture was down grading to both. You insulted the QB, his family and the coach. These are just High School kids playing their sport, and doing well, give credit where credit is due!!!!!!
December 3, 2008 at 8:14 p.m.6 p.m. @ Alamodome, confirmed!
December 3, 2008 at 1:41 p.m.Being a strong Bobcat supporter, it is a shame that the Victoria Advocate advertised our athletic program, and Refugio, through the use of the picture of our athletic director and starting quarterback. I will personally choose to support the Caller Times who presented the Bobcat football players with the gold football tropy in their moment of victory. Way to go Caller Times!! Shame on you Advocate!!
December 2, 2008 at 12:26 p.m.The Corpus Christi Caller chose to publish a picture of the Refugio Bobcats gathered in celebration around their trophy. How appropriate! I think the Victoria Advocate owes the town of Refugio an apology for the choice of pictures they chose to put on the cover of their sports section. If so many other wonderful aspects of the game were photographed, why was this picture chosen to run on a day when the focus should have been on celebrating a job well done? I think we all know the answer...no matter how someone may chose to defend their "perspective".
December 2, 2008 at 7:29 a.m.I was glad to see the other pictures. Unfortunately, the picture printed on the cover of the sports section and the lead to the story - what most people see- do not lift up but tear down.
December 2, 2008 at 7:26 a.m.We value your comments about our coverage, however please note there were 3 other photos included in the online story package, plus over 50 other images of everything from mom in the stands holding signs, the band, the team saying the pledge of allegiance and coaches focusing on the game in our Refugio Photo Album.
December 2, 2008 at 12:49 a.m.While Frank Tilley may be looking for a fresh perspective, the focus of the Victoria Advocate should be on recognizing the talent, sacrifice, and effort of young athletes. The choice to publish this photo was disrespectful to an exceptional quarterback and fine young man and to his coach who focuses 99.9% of his time on building up his players.
This is the second time the Advocate has portrayed our quarterback in a bad light. His stats speak for themselves.
December 1, 2008 at 7:09 p.m.We try to cover as many aspects of the game as possible, including the fans, sideline images, reaction shots and action. The traditional Status Quo shot is of the action, but we try to show a side of the game seen from a fresh perspective and not an image that everyone is used to seeing.
November 30, 2008 at 11:54 p.m.Tilley - very nice pic album of the game. Didn't see it earlier.
November 30, 2008 at 6:42 p.m.Some nice pictures there. I also encourage readers to check out Advocate photo editor Frank Tilley's album from the game here.
November 30, 2008 at 1:11 p.m.Congrats Refugio and Ganado...Here is the Caller's article (Slavik) on the Bobcat game.

Check out Yates "action" game pics. He showed the skill and talent of the players and of the camera man versus a standing coach chewing the qb out "after" the play. Only action I see is jaw.
