CORPUS CHRISTI - Cuero receiver Robert Armstrong had an idea the Gobblers were going to throw the ball against La Feria, and he wasn't disappointed.
Armstrong caught six passes for 123 yards and three touchdowns, and Isaiah Glover added six catches for 117 yards and one touchdown as Cuero cruised to a 55-13 Class 3A, Division I quarterfinal win over the Lions on Saturday night at Buccaneer Stadium.
"All week in practice we've been throwing a lot and I was ready for this game," Armstrong said. "Our passing game's been looking good. We have a good quarterback and our receivers do what they need to do in the passing game."
The Gobblers rolled up 279 of their 507 total yards through the air while improving to 11-1 and advancing to the semifinals for the fourth time in five years. Cuero will play Waco La Vega, a 34-28 overtime winner over Navasota on Friday night. The semifinal game will be played Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Round Rock ISD Stadium.
"We had a good game plan coming in," said Cuero quarterback Tyler Arndt, who was 14 of 18, including the four touchdown passes. "They did a good job with the run early so we had to open it up a little bit with the passing game."
Cuero scored on all six of its possessions in the first half and had a commanding 42-7 lead at halftime. The Gobblers led 35-0 before La Feria (7-6) scored on a 19-yard pass from Colie Long to Alfredo Gonzalez.
Arndt threw touchdown passes 4, 11 and 69 yards to Armstrong, the latter coming on the final play of the second quarter, and a 32-yard scoring pass to Glover. The Gobblers also scored on runs of 4 and 7 yards by Brent Johnson.
"We got Isaiah involved and Chance (Harryman, who had two catches for 39 yards) too, and not just Robert and that's a good thing for us," Arndt said. "We've got to keep them going."
Armstrong also had three punt returns for 72 yards and just missed a fourth touchdown when he was ruled down on the La Feria 1-yard line after a 27-yard reception in the third quarter. Armstrong and Glover, who rushed one time for 8 yards, also played in a Cuero secondary that limited the Lions to 56 yards of passing through three quarters.
"Robert had a great game and Isaiah had a great game too," Cuero coach Mark Reeve said. "I thought all four of our secondary guys played really well. If they wouldn't have, we would have had trouble stopping them."
Cuero added 1-yard touchdown runs by Cole Pargmann in the third quarter and Troy Ruiz in the fourth quarter. The Lions recovered a Cuero fumble and scored on a 42-yard pass from Long to Randy Rodriguez with 23 seconds remaining in the game.
"We started off hot just like we did last week," Arndt said. "We got the momentum early and just took them out of the game."

December 7, 2008 at 8:43 a.m.yea all you can name is one team..beeville and they aint even that good..come on all that winning cuero does is to little weak teams from 3A..when they play the good teams what happens..they lose..
December 3, 2008 at 12:16 a.m.La Vega has athletes. This will be a tough task. Much better squad than La Vernia was. They will be the toughest test for Cuero yet. Cuero is good. They will give La Vega all they can handle. This game will be a game of turn overs and time of possession. Cuero needs to grind it out on the ground, inch by inch, yard by yard if they have hopes of moving on! I am certainly pulling for Cuero.
December 2, 2008 at 12:14 p.m.man cuero needs to step up to class 4A...they are beating ppl way to easily in 3A..i bet if they go up to 4A they will not be beating ppl this bad..they prolly wont even win..i bet memorial could beat them...
December 2, 2008 at 11:08 a.m.What's up with letting Parr play? Is football THAT important to LV? Play football vs. teaching kids morals, consequences to their actions, ethical values, etc. Did the coach have anything to do with getting the charges dropped? Wouldn't surprise me at all.
December 1, 2008 at 9:13 p.m."shoeless joe" vega - lol wow...the DA dropped it but the ISD seemed ok with it.
dbl. tie your shoes, people!!
December 1, 2008 at 1:58 p.m.Just a note about La Vega. They are much better than a 2 loss team. Their first loss came at Abilene Wylie in which LV was without their star running back, Chris Parr. Mr Parr was incarcerated for a couple months for stealing a pair of shoes off another kid at gunpoint. It just so happened that the DA's office dropped the charges the week before the playoffs were to start. They only lost by 2 points. Easily could have been the other way. The second loss was due to Coach Willie William intentionally throwing the game because he didn't want to face Liberty Hill in the finals. This has been confirmed through the LV students bragging at school and the local papers website starting Tuesday of that week. Lowly Lorena played LV's 2nd and 3rd string and barley pulled off the win. In fact, Texas Football awarded Lorena the "Army Strong Team" for that week. Which was a big laugh for us here in the Waco area. I just wanted to say BEAT la vega, the most decpised team in all of Central Texas. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!
December 1, 2008 at 1:16 p.m.Is Trent Jackson done for the year or will he be back soon?
