A 19-year-old man was in critical condition in a Corpus Christi hospital Thursday night after he lost control of his car in Cuero, hitting a fire hydrant, electrical pole, tree and school zone sign before finally coming to a stop.

The man was driving north in the 700 block of N. Esplanade St. in a white 2004 Oldsmobile Alero Thursday afternoon when the accident happened, the Cuero Police Department said. The department would not release the name of the victim as the crash is still under investigation.

"It looked like he was trying to pass someone," said Teriza Philips who witnessed the accident.

The Cuero woman said the car looked to be going about 80 mph in a 30 mph zone.

The Jaws of Life were used to remove the man from his car. He was later airlifted to the Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, the police department said.

  • Even though most of the time it is young people, dont always assume that "speeding+youth=tragedy". As we know from the stockbauer accident, its not only the young that like to speed...

  • My daughter drove by this accident on her way down for Thanksgiving. She said it was horrible.
