Louis Jaynes and William Weber have been appointed drivers of the fire horses.

The performances given here yesterday by Miller Bros. Wild West Show was very thrilling and exceedingly pleasing, and under more favorable weather conditions the performance would have displayed there talents to much better advantage. The ground was covered with a sheet of water and was very boggy in places, causing several horses to fall with their riders, although none were seriously injured.

The coveted district championship that Victoria's Stingarees have been striving to reach for twelve long weeks became a beautiful reality on the sunbaked Beeville gridiron yesterday as the flying feet of Stoner, Stokes and Garner trampled the Beeville Trojans 25 to 7. The Stingarees will clash next weekend for the bi-district title with Coach Tom Driscoll's Bay City Black Cats.

December 1, 1958

Army M/Sgt. David D. Rocha, 31, son of Mr. and Mrs. P.C. Rocha of Refugio, is receiving three weeks of training at the Army Cold Weather and Mountain School of Fort Greely Alaska. Accustomed to the 70-degree weather of their home station at Fort Bragg, N.C., Sgt. Rocha and other paratroopers of the 503rd Infantry arrived at Ft. Greely and found howling winds and a temperature of 15 degrees below zero. He is being trained to build and live in arctic shelters, to use skis, snow shoes and toboggans, and is learning through direct experience the effects of extreme cold on weapons and equipment. Sgt. Rocha is scheduled to complete the training on Dec. 6 and to then return to his regular assignment as platoon sergeant in the infantry's Co. D. at Fort Bragg.

Trophy winners for the recent gathering of the Greater Victoria Toastmasters and Victoria Christian Toastmasters are Brian Reed, Jim Pax and Stephen Bennett.

Goliad - Presentation of the 16th annual Presidio La Bahia Award by the Kathryn Stoner O'Connor Foundation will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Presidio La Bahia near Goliad. The ceremonies will be conducted by the Sons of the Republic of Texas. The $2,000 award may be made to one writer, or may be divided among two or three writers.
