Editor, the Advocate:

Exelon has plans to dump nuclear waste into the Guadalupe River.

“Discharge of cooling basin blowdown water and treated radwaste effluent will be to a diffuser structure located approximately mid-channel of the Guadalupe River.” (Direct quote taken from Exelon’s application for a license.)

Excuse me! Radwaste is an industry code word for toxic radioactive nuclear waste created by nuclear power plants, but the word “radwaste” sounds good, sounds nice, sounds easy. “Blowdown” is an industry term for cooling system waste.

Exelon is going to periodically dump radioactive nuclear waste into the Guadalupe River unless they are stopped. I am not talking about a five-gallon bucket full every now and then. Exelon’s application says the blowdown minimum rate of 9,833 gpm (gallons per minute) is normal with a maximum rate of 28,383 gpm. This will contain both blowdown waste and radwaste.

9,833 gpm is equal to 102 new City of Victoria garbage cans being dumped into the river every minute and 28,383 gpm is equal to 295 new City of Victoria garbage cans.

Exelon will say that the toxic radioactive nuclear wastes they plan on dumping into the river are low level and insignificant, however, toxic nuclear waste is still toxic nuclear waste even if you call it “radwaste.”

As for as being insignificant, OK, then Exelon should just permanently keep this waste on their own property. Perhaps they can mix it into their 4,000-acre lake and use it to water their landscape.

There is an old cattle country saying that applies in this case. “Don’t drink downstream from the herd.” Our neighbors in Port Lavaca, Seadrift, Port O’Connor and all bay fishermen are downstream from the proposed Exelon dumping site. Everyone needs to start paying attention and speak up before it’s too late.

  • NUKES DO NOT DISCHARGE ANY TYPE OF NUCLEAR WASTE INTO THE WATER SYSTEMS,THEY HAVE ALL TYPES OF SYSTEMS TO CHECK FOR LEAKS. IF THEY DON'T BUILD IT IN VICTORIA , THEY WILL BUILD IT DOWN THE ROAD WITH THE SAME EFFECTS, VICTORIA NEEDS THE ECONOMY,ONLY WATER LOST IS IN EVAPORATION, WHICH TURNS TO RAIN,ONLY TIME THE WATER IN THE PLANT CAN BECOME RADIOACTIVE IS WHEN THERE IS A LEAK IN A TUBE , THE WATER IS DETECTED, ISOLATED ,REPAIRED AND DISPOSED OF SAFELY.I LIVE ON THE BACK BAYS IN PORT LAVACA I WORRY MORE ABOUT THE MANURE AND ALL THE CHEMICALS AND PESTICIDES THAT ARE INTRODUCED TO THE RIVERS FROM YOUR YARDS AND FARMS. DON'T BELIEVE THE PROPAGANDA OF THE RICH.THEY DON'T MIND TAKING THE POORS LAND TO BENEFIT THEM BUT WHEN IT TOUCHES THERE HOME THEY CAN'T TAKE IT ?

  • "Anyway, there is another old saying...If you tell a lie often enough it starts to sound like the truth. Mr. Attorney whatever, you keep telling your story and maybe you will start believing it real soon."

I believe that is called "The No Spin Zone!"

  • I don't even have one word...Oh yeah I do!! PROPAGANDA!!!!What on earth makes you think that even if they considered it, they would get away with it. Oh wait, we have plenty of crackshot keyboard warrior reporters just waiting in the shadows to expose them. This is absolutely ridiculous. Other than my former words, I really don't know what else to say.

EDIT:"“Discharge of cooling basin blowdown water and treated radwaste effluent will be to a diffuser structure located approximately mid-channel of the Guadalupe River.” (Direct quote taken from Exelon’s application for a license.)

That says it will go to a structure near the river, it says NOTHING of disposing of the waste.  You are just taking something and coming up with outrageous claims in order to frighten people into your point of view.  I've said before that I'm all for people making up their own minds, but they should make up their minds when they become aware of all the FACTS, and not the LIES from people with an agenda.

  • Thanks for your letter. My only hope is that people really give this some very serious thought. I expecially appreciated your truthful statement the old cattle country saying, "Don't drink downstream water from the herd".

  • Perhaps they could mix it in with the drinking water supplied to the plant workers? Hummmmm
