CUERO - The discovery of a mysterious animal in rural DeWitt County is eerily similar to one killed in 2004 and dubbed the Elmendorf Beast.

In August of 2004, an Elmendorf rancher shot the animal after it reportedly killed 35 chickens in one day. Animals similar to the Elmendorf Beast were killed later in Pollok and in Lufkin. In 2005 a similar animal was also trapped and killed near Coleman.

McAnally, reached by telephone Sunday evening, said, "It took three years, but I was finally told it was a coyote with mange."

In 2006, University of Texas professor Pamela Owen, who holds a doctorate in mammalogy with a specialization in carnivores, appeared on the Discovery Channel for Kids program "Mystery Hunters" and said that the "Elmendorf Beast" was a coyote with mange.

The mythical chupacabra is associated particularly with Puerto Rico and Mexico. The name translates literally from the Spanish as "goat sucker." It comes from the creature's reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock, especially goats.
