Editor, The Advocate:
There's no denying Joe Galloway earns our enormous respect for his work as a journalist. That said, he has managed to write a pretty damn scary editorial that gives a sneak peek at our gloomy economic future.
We can't lay this financial nightmare solely on the GOP doorstep. That's too simple for something so complex. Our financial hurricane is built on multi-layers of greed, deceit and just plain stupidity. Our national leadership, no matter what political persuasion, must assume a major part of the blame. They have failed to represent our interests and have put our national security in jeopardy.
Galloway would have us believe that opposing political socialistic proposals is somehow opposing Christian teachings. Neighbors helping one another because of their faith is not socialism. Socialism is government taking from the individual's efforts and creativity to empower itself. Even when deemed necessary, such practices can lead to tyranny.
Recalling the Great Depression, Galloway was almost nostalgic about what our 21st century economic disaster will be like. There can be no comparison. My dad told me his family was so poor that when the depression hit they couldn't tell the difference. That would not be the same today. Seventy years ago, his family was comfortable like most Americans living with little or no money in a rural environment. Not so today. If we had to rely on gardening, raising chickens, hunting and fishing, most of us would quickly starve to death!
Because we can't know what the future holds, we are afraid. We should replace fear with a determination that makes us more responsible for our private economic practices, and makes us more aware of what our leaders are doing and why. We must demand honesty and transparency from them.
Lastly, if we want to know who is at the bottom of the pickle in which we find ourselves and who can best get us out, then we need to take a long, cold look in the mirror.
