THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to the St. Joseph High School band. In a recent appearance at the Victoria Mall, crowds applauded after hearing the musicians warm up! They know how to fill up a football stadium. Don't let the size fool you. It's small, but it plays big!

Thumbs up to the election being over soon.

Thumbs up to lower gasoline prices with hopes that food prices go down, too.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down on the mercenaries. Watching the "Make a fortune from real estate foreclosures" on TV brings one thought: The "read my book" follow-up seems to indicate that the rats are moving in on the economy's decay and the already-suffering naive to clean up on the corpses. There is very little shame left in the "good ol'" U.S.A.

Thumbs down to cell phones. They never have worked as well as landlines. "Hello. Are you there?"

FROM THE EDITORIAL BOARD

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to the end of the election season next week. Perhaps now our country can begin to stabilize in key areas. After the roller coaster ride of the past several months, we eagerly anticipate a return to normalcy. Leaders, it's now time to stop campaigning and start leading.

Thumbs up to having the eyes of the College Football World focused intently on Lubbock, where the Longhorns and the Red Raiders will battle tonight for bragging rights as the best team in Texas. Both teams are undefeated and represent the class of NCAA teams this season.

Thumbs up for the 18-year-old Hubble Space Telescope, which is working again after being down for several weeks. Also, our wish is that long-term repairs will be made as promptly as possible so that Hubble can continue bringing us photos of distant, beautiful galaxies.

Thumbs up to the faculty and staff of Dudley Magnet School for holding a mock presidential election to teach young students the importance of voting in a democracy.

Thumbs up to the kids at Chandler Elementary School, who recycled a whopping 40 tons of paper last year as part of Victoria Kids Recycles.

Thumbs up for the 15,731 voters who cast early ballots by the end of the day Thursday evening. That's 31 percent of the eligible voters in Victoria County.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down on the apparent slip-up at Smith Elementary School, where a 9-year-old student was struck in the mouth by another student, but the injured girl's parents were not notified by the school, per school district policy.

Thumbs down on the disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, which currently afflicts about 300 South Texans as researchers continue to search for a cure.
