Two days after Exelon Nuclear stepped forward in its quest to set up shop here, opponents sounded a warning and announced an October community forum.
John Figer, director of Texans for a Sound Energy Alliance, said questions remain regarding nuclear power, safety and water usage.
The alliance, funded by some members of the local and wealthy O’Connor family, cite concerns about nuclear safety and environmental risks.
On Wednesday, Exelon filed an application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an important step in operating a nuclear power plant on 11,000 acres in South Victoria County.
Exelon representatives say the new generation of plants are safe, reliable and offer an environmentally sound means to produce clean energy.
Figer’s not sold, though.
“Exelon talks of being a good neighbor in Victoria County, but it still hasn’t addressed the long-term safety and environmental questions shared by many of us who live here in the Guadalupe River basin,” Figer said.
To discuss such questions, the alliance is hosting a community forum on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Leo J. Welder Center, 214 N. Main St.
The forum will feature Arjun Makhijani, president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research. Makhijani is a nuclear fission specialist who has testified before Congress, written books and reports, and appeared on national TV news shows.
Exelon representatives, meanwhile, promise future forums to answer public questions.
Until then, Figer said he’s disappointed the nuclear company has yet to answer his alliance’s questions.
“That may be a standard practice in Illinois and other states where Exelon has had its way, but in Texas good neighbors work and talk to find true resolution before building something that’s going to affect people, land and water,” he said.

I am quite sure it is the O'Connor's right to support which ever side they want to.
September 8, 2008 at 11:56 p.m.Wealthy or not.
I am not an O’Connor. This avatar and name started as a joke during the embarrassing yet very entertaining legal problems facing our city officials. Gosh, I hope TMOC has a sense of humor.
September 8, 2008 at 5:32 p.m.This “wealthy O’Connor family” as the VA keeps reminding us, deserves credit for challenging Exelon. Nuclear power, waste, safety, and water usage are serious long-term issues. We will force our grandchildren to deal with the consequences of our decisions. Sure, the recently built nuclear plants are safe, but that is today. We should concern ourselves with the generations to follow. This local “wealthy O’Connor family” should not stand alone concerning these issues. There are many wealthy families in Victoria.
Like Figer, I’m disappointed the nuclear company has yet to answer the alliance’s questions. We need long-term safety and environmental questions answered.
Folks, these are serious long-term issues.
I would like to add something to this discussion if yall dont mind. Many times I have had the opportunity to fly over the South Texas Nuclear near Bay City on my way offshore to work. (I work for one of those evil energy companiess)
September 8, 2008 at 3:19 p.m.Things I noticed were the populations of deer, wild hogs, turkeys, and of course cattle. None of the mentioned were glowing or of abnormal size. The cooling pond for the nuclear plant would also have seagulls and pelicans making use of it. I might also add that the Colorado River was flowing and not sucked dry by the plant. There were also plenty of cars and trucks parked at the site, I guess people work there.
I live on San Antonio Bay. I do know that the more men tamper with the environment, the more it affects our bays and estuaries. I have heard countless stories from old timers about the way things used to be - all the fish and shrimp you could catch. As we get more development, our bays and rivers suffer. If you enjoy the outdoors and want a clean environment, pay attention to this project. I guarantee that a project this large will have an effect on our area in more ways than one. I for one am willing to look at wind energy and solar, two things we have plenty of down here. Why not use that 11,000 acres for something like that? And, I always wondered where they put that radioactive byproduct that comes from nuclear energy. Do we want to hand that down to our kids and grandkids? Do you know that the plant will come first in front of Victoria when there is a shortage of water? Did they tell you that? Even if you could care less about the environment, you still need water to drink.....
September 8, 2008 at 11:35 a.m.Folks... This is a big deal, the proposed plant will change the landscape forever. And all the possibilities from a Nuclear Plant being in your backyard, things that Exelon will not bring up. It will affect the entire region of Texas. So just because someone else doesn't believe what they tell us to be the truth, and are standing up and asking questions for the entire community, you should at the very least respect that. After all, this is the core of Texas Values to stand up in what you believe in and fight back. Don't attack the family, heck I won't even attack Kenny (unless he provokes me, but I respect his right to believe in whatever he wants) So when the other side Speaks Up, you can either listen to what they have to say, or walk away.

September 6, 2008 at 12:40 p.m.These nuclear opponents have already revealed their true stripes when their spokesperson was quoted, not once by twice, in this paper saying that he had no problem with nuclear power, he just didn't want it here. That pretty much destroys his and his group's credibility. Discussions between Mr. Figer and Exelon have never, ever resulted in the company saying, "Trust Me," as he represented. He has asked and was answered repeatedly the same way, as soon as the information is releaseable to the public, he will have it too, not before. As a matter of fact, Exelon is making Mr. Figer his own copy of the entire releaseable application and will mail it to him as soon as that is possible.
September 6, 2008 at 9:25 a.m.Ethics are always a matter of the truth, not what someone with a hidden agenda represents as the truth.
Have a great nuclear day!
It's all about money. No matter which side you're on, it's more than likely you're there because of a monetary interest. Same goes for the wealthy and not-so-wealthy. Follow the money.
September 5, 2008 at 11:11 p.m.Can the Advocate say WEALTHY O'Connor family just one more time?....Please I am sure we all want to hear it. Why don't we recognize them for who they are, concerned citizens. Whether you agree with their stance on the nuclear issue or not they are in fact concerned citizens and the wealth has nothing to do with it. This goes for the article concerning Sheriff T. Michael O'Connor's family and the fatal funnel as well. Let's recognize the sheriff and his family for who they are. A close knit and loving family whose concerns and cares are genuine and not based on wealth. I am pretty sure he along with his family don't want to be recognized in this manner. His actions are not based on the balance in his bank account but his heartfelt dedication to cleaning up and taking care of our community and citizens. I have not once heard a speech or read an article where he or his family have referred to themselves or based their decisions on wealth, so please give it a break advocate.
