Ryan Valdez wasn’t sure he would get his chance to play for the St. Joseph Flyer’s Friday night.
After “throwing up a couple of times” before the game, Valdez make the Centurions sick with two long touchdown runs as the Flyers topped Corpus Christi John Paul II 46-7 at Patti Welder Stadium.
Valdez scored on runs of 75 and 77 yards and finished with 163 yards on only 4 carries to lead a ground game that rolled up 307 yards.
“It feels great,” said the diminutive senior after the game. “The offensive line did a great job. I had big holes to run through.”
After opening the game with a 10 play, 65-yard drive that took 4:27 off the clock and ended with a nine-yard scoring run quarterback Kevin Daniels, the Flyers struck fast and furious after that.
Following a 41-yard punt return by Hayden Vesely to the John Paul 18, two plays later Don Paul Dubose scored from the 18 with 5:10 left in the first quarter, and the Flyers led 12-0.
Following a Centurion punt, the Flyers took four plays to move 44 yards in 1:35 with Kamen Ruelas finding the end zone from 13 yards out. St. Joseph led 18-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The score changed quickly as Vesely picked off a Lynell Jones pass and raced 35 yards to pay dirt and the lead grew to 25-0 following Daniels point after kick.
“It felt great,” Vesely said of his first career interception return for a score. I read the quarterback’s eyes like coach teaches is to and put myself in a position to make a play.”
Vesely would add another interception on John Paul’s next possession, and it took the Flyers two plays to score. Again Daniels did the honors, sweeping around the end and racing 52 yards for the score. He picked up big blocks on the edge from Luke Dornak and Denver Diefenbach. St. Joseph led 32-0 with 9:55 left in the first half.
The Flyers would add one more score before intermission when Valdez raced untouched for the first of his long scores on first down. The score stood at 39-0 at the half.
Flyers Coach John Mares was proud of his squad.
“They came after us, but our athletes are a class act. I am proud of all of them,” said the coach.
John Paul Coach Rudy Gonzalez, whose team is in its first year of varsity competition said, “We can learn a lot from a class program like St. Joseph. We can aspire to be like them. We are still trying to find our identify and not sure yet what we can do well.”
One thing the Centurions did well in the second half was pass the ball against St. Joseph’s second line defenders.
After Valdez’s second long touchdown run and the point after by Andre Del Bosque made the score 46-0, John Paul backup quarterback Jose Trevino connected led the Centurions on a 72-yard scoring drive. On the drive, he completed 2 of 4 passes for 30 yards including 8-yard touchdown pass to Christian Cisneros.
Defensively, St. Joseph also dominated holding John Paul to 105 total yards, most of that once the game was no longer in doubt. Sam Followwill also had an interception for the Flyers.
St. Joseph (2-2) has a bye next week before opening its Division II, District 3 campaign on Oct. 10 against Giddings State School. John Paul fell to 0-3 on the year.

Only a few substitutions? They ran three QB's and had underclassmen playing by the time that the game finished. How can you "understand" that there were few substitutions from news footage? I am not taking anything away from this young man...by the way it is tastless to refer to these kids by name on a public forum. I am just saying that all of the coaches in the stands should let the sideline coaches do their jobs. Do you think that the coach's son should have to put up with the obviously snide remarks of disgruntled parents? He is just a kid.
October 6, 2008 at 8:01 a.m.I wasn't at the game but read the article. Did the other team pull their starters too to avoid injury? Is that why Valdez was able to dominate? I don't think so. I watched the footage from the last game. Seemed like there were only a few substitutions on offense and the subs made it work and work better! Sorry to bust your starter's son's bubble!
October 5, 2008 at 10:43 p.m.True STJ fans, past and current, know not to rock the boat. You don't win football games from the stands. Simple truth is that the starters were pulled to avoid injury....the outcome would have been the same for the starter due to their competition's lack of experience.
October 3, 2008 at 2:23 p.m.No bubblebuster I am not his dad just a fan of ST. JOSEPH .
October 3, 2008 at 11:14 a.m.Can't move at this point of the game! 7K? Closer to 8K! Most of these players play more than one spot...doesn't matter, got to appease the masses!
October 3, 2008 at 9:51 a.m.save $7k, move the kid to MHS. lol. As a senior he is on varisty and he can help in the backfield. Must play more than 1 Spot. just an option. Cuero? Goliad? Edna? Bloomington?
October 3, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.Who are you, his dad?
October 3, 2008 at 9:08 a.m.It is sad when the coach favors his son at the running back spot when all the parents, fans and students know who the player should be at the running back spot just look at the performance by the young man 4 carries 163 yards 2 touchdowns, the coach son only had 4 carries 46 yards 1 touchdown facts state the truth.
