Area candidates share goals at forum

“Availability, visibility and accountability.”

This is the slogan of Democrat Richard Castillo’s campaign for constable of Victoria County’s precinct 1. It was also the primary message of several other candidates for county constable and commissioner who spoke at a forum Tuesday night at the Victoria Mall.

Major goals of Allan Ramirez, the Republican candidate for commission of precinct 1, were “to be accessible” and “to be accountable” to the residents.

The forum was one of a series hosted by Victoria Apartment Association in recent years.

“We want to give the candidates to get to talk to the people and we want the people to get out and see the candidates, said Toni Stithem, the Apartment Association’s executive. .

The forum featured nine candidates: Castillo and his opponent Republican Stacey Martin; Ramirez and his Democratic opponent Kenny Spann; rivals for commissioner of precinct 3, Democrat Ron Reyna and Republican incumbent Gary Burns; rivals for constable of precinct 4, Republican incumbent John Miller and Independent Alton Johnston; and Republican Kenneth Easley, the constable of precinct 3.

Easley’s Democratic opponent, Robert Rodriguez, could not attend the event because of a prior commitment.

James Calaway, the Republican constable of precinct 2, also did not participate. He is running unopposed.

Each candidate spoke for five minutes about what they planned to do if elected. Several candidates for commissioner emphasized community beautification, safety and health.

“Occasionally, the people of Placedo and Bloomington are asked to boil their water before using it,” said Spann. “This seems pretty unacceptable.”

Spann and Ramirez both advocated improving the water drainage systems in Bloomington and Placedo.

Candidates for constable stressed that the position required dedicated individuals willing to work for little pay.

Each said his qualifications, experience and commitment made him the best person for the job.

“I’m looking at becoming a full time constable if I’m elected,” said Martin.

About 20 people sat in the audience. Though there was a question period after the forum, no one asked any questions.
