What do you think when you see an NFL game end with a final score of 56-35 and six touchdown passes from the winning quarterback?
My first impression would normally be that someone needs to bump up the difficulty on their Madden game, but this week I just kicked myself for not drafting Brett Favre on any of my fantasy teams.
Brett the Jet has been paying off for those owners that took a chance on him all year, but Sunday was one of those jackpot performances.
Depending on your league’s scoring system, Favre netted in the neighborhood of 46 points this week. Considering that 20 to 25 points is considered an outstanding day, it’s easy to imagine the vast majority of teams starting Favre came away winners this week.
Favre’s big game is part of an impressive trend this season. The top scorer each week is putting up bigger numbers than the week before. Michael Turner was top dog in Week 1 with roughly 35 points. Jay Cutler posted 39 in Week 2 and Ronnie Brown scored a beefy 42 in Week 3. Does this mean we’ll see a 50-point outing this week? More importantly, will it be someone on my team?
Players to watch
My credibility took a big hit last week. I recommended Carson Palmer, Marshawn Lynch and Brian Griese. Neither Lynch or Griese topped 9 points and Palmer didn’t even play. That means I’ve got to come through this week or the two or three people that actually read this are going to boycott the column.
Kyle Orton, QB, Chicago – The man affectionately known as “Neckbeard” threw for three touchdowns last week. This could be a sign of things to come as the Bears take on a Detroit Lions team that takes a very unconventional approach to defense – they don’t play it.
Jason Campbell, QB, Washington – Campbell torched the Cowboys last week and now plays the Eagles, who gave up three TD passes to the above mentioned Neckbeard.
Jacksonville defense - I know they just gave up 27 points and three TD passes to the Houston Texans, but the matchup this week looks too good to pass up. The Jags get a very banged up Steelers team that features an injured QB and a third-string running back.
ACFFL Update
Paul Ebner took Brett Favre in the third round of the Advocate Charity Fantasy Football League draft back in August and there were a few giggles to be heard when he did. I should know, I was one of the gigglers.
Ebner is the only one giggling about it now as Favre’s 46-point masterpiece helped Luv Ya Blue remain perfect at 4-0 on the season. That win streak could really blossom with the schedule smiling on Ebner the way it is.
Luv Ya Blue does not face a team with a winning record as of right now until Week 10. Three of the five opponents in that span are averaging 75 or fewer points per game. None of the five average more than 91 points per game, and Luv Ya Blue is chugging along with nearly 109 points per game.
It’s kind of hard to pick a team to go 10-0, but an 8-2 or 9-1 start isn’t out of the question for Luv Ya Blue.
