A 51-year-old Bloomington man will spend 10 years in prison after a jury found him guilty on Friday of sexually assaulting a girl.
Guillermo Gonzales was convicted of three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. He was charged with accused of assaulting a female relative twice in 2003 and once in 2007.
The girl had reported Gonzales, but later recanted her story under pressure from her family, prosecutor Eli Garza said.
"The jury decided to protect the victim because the people who should have protected her, her family, did not," he said.
A thorough investigation by the Victoria County Sheriff's Office and testimony from Hope of South Texas staff led to the conviction, Garza said.
Gonzales was given three 10-year sentences, which he will serve concurrently. He will also pay $578 in court costs.

April 6, 2009 at 9:31 p.m.So no punishment for the family? Aiding & abetting? Was the child removed from this family? Their breeding rights should be stripped & any other children removed from their custody as well. He should also be forced to pay for the childs counseling she will need to deal with this trauma.
April 6, 2009 at 9:25 p.m.What? And he'll be out in 5? 10 years on each count would have been lenient, but this IS better than nothing.
