n The Senate has approved Senate Bill 567 by Sen. Glenn Hegar, R-Katy, the bill for the University of Houston-Victoria to become a four-year institution.

n The Senate bill will go to the House of Representatives Higher Education Committee for approval.

n If the bill is approved there, it will go to the House floor.

n If the House approves the bill, it will go to Gov. Rick Perry for approval.

n Rep. Geanie Morrison, R-Victoria, authored identical House Bill 1056, which was approved by the House Higher Education Committee Wednesday.

n The bill will go to the House for a vote, but a calendar date has not been set.

n If the bill is approved by the House, it will then go to the Senate Higher Education Committee.

The University of Houston-Victoria has moved another step closer to becoming a four-year institution with about seven weeks left in legislative session.

The Senate unanimously approved Senate Bill 567 by Sen. Glenn Hegar, R-Katy, Wednesday.

The bill was approved by the Senate Higher Education Committee on April 1.

"Representative (Geanie) Morrison has taken the lead with this bill in the House," Hegar said. "There is a really good chance of it becoming a full four-year university."

The House Higher Education Committee passed the identical House Bill 1056 by Geanie Morrison, R-Victoria, Wednesday. The bill will now be sent to the House floor.

"I think we will have the house bill passed in a week, the only hold up will be the Easter holiday," Morrison said.

Many legislators take time off during for the holiday, she said.

"It'll go to the local and consent calendars and once it is scheduled it should pass out of the house," said Morrison, who is a member of the calendar committee. "I'm happy the bill is moving."

UHV President Tim Hudson was ecstatic to hear the bill moved forward in both the Senate floor and House Higher Education committee.

"I'm excited, we have passed another milestone today," Hudson said. "I really appreciate the work of Rep. Morrison and Sen. Hegar."

Morrison said because UHV is not asking for funding and the support of the community has helped move the bill smoothly through legislation.

"Not having any fiscal impact at this point makes a big impact during our economic times," Morrison said. "The great support for expanding higher education and expanding access to help the state reach its goals is what we need."

As long as one of the bills is approved by Gov. Rick Perry, the expansion of UHV will become a law, Hegar said.
