WHAT'S NEXT
House Bill 1056 and Senate Bill 567 are in the Higher Education Committees of the House and Senate and are awaiting dates to be heard in each committee.
Although the bills are identical, they must go through the process. Once the bills are approved in both houses of the legislature, they will go to Gov. Rick Perry.
The University of Houston-Victoria continues to clear hurdles in legislation to become a four-year institution.
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives approved House Bill 1056 by Rep. Geanie Morrison, R-Victoria, which calls for the expansion of the school.
The bill was previously approved by the House Higher Education Committee.
"The bill has been passed out of the house and is in great shape with both chambers," Morrison said. "I am very pleased with how the bill has been received."
An identical bill, Senate Bill 567 by Sen. Glenn Hegar, R-Katy, was approved by the Senate Higher Education Committee and Senate earlier in the month.
"We are well on our way, and we're looking forward to finishing the process and getting it to the governor's desk," Morrison said.
The identical bills have been through the House and Senate Higher Education Committees.
"They've already been through committee and are at exactly the same place," Morrison said. "We have them positioned and ready to move on."
UHV President Tim Hudson said he's pleased with the legislation.
"I am happy that today we are one step closer toward our goal of becoming a true destination university," Hudson said. "We have had wonderful leadership from Rep. Geanie Morrison and Sen. Glenn Hegar throughout this process, and consistent support from the community and from all UHV constituencies."
Morrison said with one month left in session she expects the bill to be approved and sent to Gov. Rick Perry.
"The governor is very well aware of the bill and was presented with what the community wants," Morrison said.
Calendar dates have not been scheduled for SB 567 and HB 1056 in the House or Senate Higher Education Committee.
Morrison said they are making sure all bases are covered in both chambers.
"Our excitement grows every day, and we expect to hear more good news soon," Hudson said.

Hi all,
I am a new faculty member at the UHV. I will begin to teach and conduct research in the computer and information sciences starting this fall (mostly in the filed of gaming and AI). In deed the expansion of the UHV to a full destination university is a great chance for the city and the community. And I can not express how excited and happy I am to hear this great news. I believe that the coastal bend deserves a full term university. This is great news, Victorians. Congratulations to you all.

April 23, 2009 at 8:05 p.m.I am going back to UHV in the fall for the graduate counseling psychology program! I can not wait! Are you teaching any grad level courses?
April 23, 2009 at 3:11 p.m.Yeah! I'm thinking of going back to college too, I hear that female instructors are hotter now.
Seriously, I am interested in going back to school to study a number of areas. In fact, I plan to spend the rest of my life at university, beginning in about 3 years.
I plan to get a number of degrees, and apply for research grants the rest of my life. Basically dedicating the rest of my life to learning as much as I can, solving problems, inventing, and innovating what ever I can.
I have no children and my wife only wants to shop, sell, travel, and read.
“University is the place to be, reading and meeting interesting people is the life for me.” I took that off of green acres in case no one got it.
April 23, 2009 at 1:18 p.m.I'm an adjunct there so I teach whenever there is a need. I have taught stats for the school of business, learning and memory, and social psychology at UHV and I teach gen psych and human growth and development at Coastal Bend College. The rest of the time I work in Institutional Research. Let me know if you need any advice - I took every single psych course available at UHV and the instructors in that division especially are the very best.
April 23, 2009 at 9:50 a.m.Hi Aubrey,
I don't think the stimulus pkg has anything to do with it. The talk about making UHV a destination college began quite a while ago. Having received 2 degrees from UHV after attending about 7 other colleges (long story-too many kids, too many moves), I can tell you that you will receive the equivalent of a private school education at UHV in the face to face classes and a dang close equivalent if you do an online degree. If you are thinking about going back, contact an advisor in the degree area you want to concentrate on and they will help you get everything together. Who knows? If you take a psychology class online, you may end up in one of the sections I teach :-)
Good luck!
