Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo celebration commemorates the Battle of Puebla, where Mexico defeated the French on May 5, 1862. Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza, who commanded the Mexican army to victory, was born at the La Bahia del Espiritu Santo in Goliad.
GOLIAD CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION
Friday
5 p.m. - Presentation of 2009 Queen and her court
6-8 p.m. - Live music by Tejano, norteno and all-time classic artists
Saturday
10 a.m. - Parade at Goliad's Historical Square
11 a.m.-midnight - Music, dance performances and games at the Goliad Fairgrounds
3 p.m. - Barbecue cook-off for best brisket, pork ribs and chicken
Sunday
10-11:30 a.m. - Dignitaries will speak about Gen. Zaragoza and the Battle of Puebla at Zaragoza Statue Plaza site in front of Presidio la Bahia del Espiritu Santo
Area residents wanting to celebrate Cino de Mayo will have two chances this weekend to do so.
On Saturday in Victoria, the Victoria Chamber of Commerce - Minority Business Council - will sponsor Noche En Old Victoria from noon to 11:30 p.m. at DeLeon Plaza.
Noche showcases Victoria's Hispanic culture and supports the area youth.
The evening will include food, musical performances and even a best-dressed Chihuahua contest.
Other activities include car clubs, hip-hop groups, education booths, moon bounce, face painting and a petting zoo.
Admission is $5, but children less than 48-inches tall get in free. Proceeds go to scholarship funds for students attending the University of Houston-Victoria or The Victoria College.

GOLIAD
Goliad, the official state site of Cinco de Mayo, will celebrate Friday through Sunday at the Goliad County Fairgrounds.
On Friday, the 2009 Queen and her court will be presented, followed by a variety of Tejano, conjunto and all-time classic music. Attendees are free to bring their lawn chairs. Food booths will also be available.
Saturday's activities include a parade at 10 a.m. in Goliad's historical square. Attendees can then return to the fairgrounds to enjoy rides, baseball throws and jumping jacks.
Other entertainment includes dance ground performances by the Serpientes de Oro mariachi group from Victoria Memorial High School and a barbecue cook-off.
Sunday, the official ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Zaragoza Plaza in front of the Presidio la Bahia del Espiritu Santo. Dignitaries the Mexican Consul from San Antonio will be present.
Dignitaries from Hidalgo Nuevo Leon, Puebla were scheduled to appear, but because of the swine flu scare, they will not attend.
The City of Goliad, LULAC, Goliad Chamber of Commerce, County of Goliad, Gen. Zaragoza Society will sponsor the event.
All proceeds will go toward scholarship and charity events performed throughout the year.

superdad iam glad am not the only one feeling that....it really sad that this is happening in victoria,,,,,but the promblem is(TEJANO'S WANTING TO BE GRINGO'S LETTING THEM TAKE OVER!!!!!!) Truly i hope it pour's bucket's SATURDAY!!!!!!!!!

Parade of Homes sounds a whole lot better.......there is no VESTED interest in it for the inner circles of victoria since its for hispanic scholarships---but wait lets do the Victoria Livestock Show then B A M, its huge.
