Christian Gutierrez, dance instructor for Latin Dance Factory of Houston, will give free salsa lessons Friday at Riverside Multiplex, 1407 W. River St.

Salsa, merengue and bachata will be offered at 9 p.m. sharp. Music will then follow at 10 p.m. for dancing.

Many have wanted to dance this beautifully romantic style of dance, co-organizer Jimmy Shelton said. Salsa is a dance for salsa music, created by Spanish-speaking people from the Caribbean and their immigrant communities in the U.S. Salsa dancing mixes African and European dance influences through the music and dance fusions that are the roots of salsa: songuaguancó, rumba, boogaloo pachanga, guaracha, plena and, bomba.

The name salsa is the Spanish word for sauce, which suggests a mixture of ingredients, though this meaning is not found in most stories of the term's origin.

Dancers don't need partners to take lessons.

Cover charge for entry into Riverside is $5 and the doors open at 8 p.m.

  • I am looking forward to the dance lessons. I am tired of the same old tejano, norteno, etc. It's time for a change. It will be fun to try something else.
