WESTHOFF - A small fire broke out on the side of a home connected to a family-owned grocery store Saturday.

The fire started around 4 p.m. just outside Westhoff resident Linda Torres' washing room after a child had been playing with matches.

The child mistakenly thought the match had been put out and tossed it near a plastic planter, which began to burn, starting the fire.

The Westhoff Volunteer Fire Department promptly put out the fire before it spread, Torres said.

"Damage was just in the washroom," Torres said. "It's a mess. They had to tear down the washroom windows on the side."

No one was injured in the fire.

Torres, 62, is the owner of Torres Grocery. Her late husband, Albert Torres, had owned the store for more than 50 years.

Torres Grocery is located at 13403 U.S. 87 North in Westhoff.
