OLIVIA - One person was killed and another injured in a fiery one-car crash late Sunday.

Carol Jean Rodgers, 69, of Port Lavaca was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:40 p.m. by Justice of the Peace James W. Duckett.

The injured person was listed as Donald Pipes, 51, of Port Lavaca. He was in fair condition at Memorial Medical Center in Port Lavaca.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Ronald Johnson reported that Rodgers was driving east on state Highway 172 in a 2002 Olds coupe and failed to notice a sign warning about the road ending.

She applied the brakes and began to skid, when the front of vehicle hit a utility pole. The car then spun and rolled over several times, coming to rest facing west on the passenger side and catching fire.

The driver was partially ejected and came to rest under the burning vehicle. Pipes was pulled from the vehicle's rear window by a witness on the scene.

The name of the witness was unavailable. Johnson reported that Rodgers is suspected of being under the influence of marijuana and alcohol.

  • archiebonker,
the Advocate did not contact law enforcement personnel to obtain the information because the name of the witness was/is available. Because I was there when the wreck took place, I gave a full report of what happened to the TDPS including my name.

  • don't blame the Advocate for reporting news and information they probably got from the law enforcement personnel! what do you want the newspaper to do first get the death certificate before they run the story in the Advocate?

  • I live in East Texas and the person that was killed is my aunt. I agree with the first post. If it has not been proven that she was under the influence of marijuana and alcohol then it should not be in the article. Thank God for the witness that was able to get the passenger to safety or it could have been two families grieving.
