Yoakum residents also get fans
YOAKUM - Residents in the Yoakum Housing Authority recently received fans to help ease the summer heat after a drive spearheaded by the XI Chi Theta Sorority. The fan drive was the sorority's "Fans for Hot Days" community service project.
Working with housing authority staff, residents who needed fans were identified. Donations also came from the Yoakum Fire Department, Bear Creek 4-H Club and numerous Yoakum businesses, as well as some in Cuero.
Etta Mae Brewer likes to sleep with a fan blowing on her.
"I have air conditioning but I don't like to run it all the time, especially at night," Brewer said. "I like the fan better."
Brewer said that turning the AC off at night also helps keep her electricity costs down.
Brewer, who turns 87 in November, is one of about 300 people locally - mostly senior citizens and others on fixed incomes - who have received a fan to help them combat this summer's record high temperatures.
Seventy-year-old Betty Lott got a fan to help circulate the air through her home.
"It helps blow the cool air from my living room through the kitchen and the other parts of the house. It's been real beneficial," Lott said. "It's been a real hot summer this year."
"We gave away almost 180 fans last year and we're probably going to top that this year," said Debbie Garner, executive director of the Victoria Senior Citizens Center.
Donations of fans or money to buy the fans continue through August.
Anyone interested in obtaining a fan should sign up at the center or with the Community Action Committee, where more than 160 fans have been handed out, said Vicki Smith, the organization's executive director.
Garner added that she has some names on the list with incorrect contact information.
"If you signed up for a fan and haven't heard from us, get back in touch," she said. "We have several names with phone numbers that aren't working numbers. We have fans for those people."
Both Garner and Smith emphasized that more fans are needed.
"It's been so hot, we give them out as soon as we get them," Garner said. "We're still needing them and we just hit August."
"The need continues to be great," said Smith. "We encourage anyone who needs a fan to come by. We have them on hand."

Comments
The fan drive has been going on for several months and we ran an article when it started. This article was to remind folks that fans are still needed. Although it's getting closer to autumn, it's still hot!
