ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have signed long snapper Nathan Hodel and claimed guard Roy Schuening off waivers from the Oakland Raiders.

Also Thursday, the Lions released fullback Terrelle Smith and tight end Dan Gronkowski, and signed cornerback Jahi Word-Daniels to the practice squad.

Coach Jim Schwartz says Hodel will play Sunday against the visiting Arizona Cardinals if regular long snapper Don Muhlbach can't play. Hodel was released by New England on Aug. 31 after spending the previous seven seasons with Arizona.

Oakland signed Schuening from its practice squad Sunday after being waived Sept. 5 by the St. Louis Rams.

Smith, who spent the previous two seasons with Arizona, had two receptions for seven yards this season. Gronkowski, a rookie out of Maryland, had one catch for four yards.
