  • ABOUT PRIMARIES

    Filing for the Republican and Democratic party primaries is Dec. 3 and ends Jan. 3. The primaries, in which parties' nominees for the general election are decided, will be March 2.

State Representative Geanie W. Morrison announced Tuesday that she will seek another term in the Texas House of Representatives.

Morrison, a Republican, represents House District 30, which includes DeWitt, Jackson, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties.

In her six terms, she has served on the House Committee on Higher Education, which she chaired for three sessions; the House Committee on Appropriations as the vice chair of the Subcommittee on Education; Rural Caucus, a group of rural legislators who band together to make a rural voice heard in the legislative process; and Juvenile Justice and Family Issues Committee.

Most recently, Morrison played an integral role in the effort to expand the University of Houston-Victoria to a four-year university. She filed House Bill 1056 and steered it through the legislative process, ensuring that the governor signed the bill.

"The passage of House Bill 1056 is a tremendous step toward expanding access to higher education in Victoria and the surrounding area," Morrison said. "Continuing education is critical to sustaining the Texas economy. "

In 1999, she authored the country's first Baby Moses legislation, which provides desperate mothers a responsible alternative to newborn abandonment. Since then, all 50 states have implemented similar measures, and countless newborns have been saved nationwide - more than 100 in Texas.

Morrison has been recognized by many groups and organizations for her leadership, and her commitment to address the issues important to Texas residents. These include Texas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators as Legislator of the Year; Texas Higher Education Leadership Star Award; Distinguished Service Award, presented by the Texas Regional Collaboratives; Educational Testing Services Legislative Excellence in Education Award; Texas Community College Teachers' Association Legislator of the Year Award; one of South Texas' Women of the Year; Boy Scouts of America and the South Texas Council's Distinguished Citizen Award.

  • Why does it have to be a D or R. Why not just a good candidate that will stand for ou freedoms and liberties. In other words The Constitution.

  • Seven Terms? Wow! Regardless of whether or not you support Morrison seven terms is sickening(by at least five terms.) We need legislation for term limits in the worst way. Oh yeah... Who would introduce that legislation? We would have to find a politician without a personal agenda who had Americans best interests in mind. Looks like Geanie will be around for years to come.

  • I have a few suggestions for Mrs. Morrison;

    Make this a remarkable term! Stand up for your constituents for a change! Shake your fist in the goverbor's face and demand an end to the TransTexas Corridor! Demand an investigation into the political pandering between the governor and HillCo. Partners, Inc.! Stop taking HillCo. money! Throw Steve Holzhauser out of your office! Send him back to GBRA wth a message" Stick the Lower Basin pipeline in Bill West's ear! Remove the diversion dam and the dams on Goff and Hog Bayou! Send the Texas Rangers to tound up Fred Bloomberg and make him remove the latter two by hand! Author legislation that makes it illegal for the federal government to impose unfunded federal mandates on this state! And if a federal judge objects, have the Rangers escort him to the state line!

    That would be a good start!

  • Perhaps Ms. Morrison (who will probably run unopposed, AGAIN), will debate herself in regards to her HB3015 (Tuition Deregulation Bill) failures. The pro-Morrison could convince us that saddling students with massive student loan debt builds character. The con-Morrison could counter that she was just following Rick Perry's orders for the legislature to shirk its fiscal responsibility of overseeing the state's flagship universities. Then the pro-Morrison could say it was the democrats fault for not fielding a successful candidate against her in the 2002 election. The con-Morrison would offer to send a letter of recommendation to all of the low-economic students who could not attend college because they were unable to afford the tuition and fees. The pro-Morrison will retort with the argument that the Texas Tomorrow Fund would have gone bankrupt with or without her HB 3015. She would remind us that since John Sharp is an Aggie he was conspiring with Perry the entire time. The con-Morrison will close the debate with thanks to the UHV Regents Pep Squad crowing how great the new 4 year UHV is. Too bad the undergraduates can’t attend because the tuition is too high. Great Debate, Ms. Morrison.
