At 4:30 every morning Ricky Mumphord is already up and cooking at his restaurant, the aptly named Mumphord's Bar-B-Q Place. He cooks the old-fashioned way, slow-roasting the meat on outside pits heated by wood and coal.

Yes, it takes more time. And yes, it takes more effort.

But it is paying off.

In a six-city online poll about the best barbecue in Texas conducted by Baylor University student Matt Sawyers, Mumphord's won, beating out places from Dallas to Waco to Houston.

"It's amazing," Mumphord, who co-owns the restaurant with his brother Keith, said. "It's very nice to know people chose us."

Sawyers, a Victoria native, conducted the poll as part of his final project for school. The second part of the project was filming a documentary about the winning restaurant, which Sawyers and project partner Stef Schrader completed two weeks ago.

An aspiring filmmaker with a love for food, Sawyers, 23, spent most of a Saturday at Mumphord's, interviewing people and getting footage of the barbecue process.

"I did another documentary-style film on a pizza place in Waco and it got such a good reception that I decided to do another one. My two favorite things are food and film and this combines them," he said. "It was a good learning experience."

It was a good learning experience in more ways than one. Although he was born and raised in Victoria, Sawyers had never eaten at Mumphord's before he made the film.

"It was definitely the best barbecue I've had in Texas and I think a lot of people agree. In fact, I called my mom before she came to visit last week and told her to bring me some of their shredded barbecue meat or else she wasn't welcome," he laughed. "I fell in love with it."

Sawyers' film on Mumphord's, which is titled "Deep in the Heart of Texas: BBQ," will be available through Baylor University on iTunes in a couple of weeks. For more information, go to www.mattsawyers.com.

  • SuperDad, you're thinking of Brothers' barbecue.

I agree that the food is pretty darned good. Better yet, the people who run the place know how to treat the customers so they'll come back.

  • Personally, I don't think any BBQ establishment in this region can hold a candle to my brother-in-law's BBQ. Custom Bar-b-cuing by David...361-655-0662. Give him a call. You won't be disappointed.
