Jackson County

History

Named for the seventh U.S. President Andrew Jackson, this county was one of the original 23 counties created on March 17, 1836 when Texas became an independent republic. It was organized in 1837 with the county seat in Texana (1836-1883), originally known as Santa Anna. The county seat has since moved to Edna, the county's largest town.

Jackson County is home to about 14,391 people with about 5,899 people living in Edna and 1,915 in Ganado. Other towns in Jackson County include La Ward, La Salle, Lolita, El Toro, Vanderbilt, Francitas, Morales and Cordele.

Interplast Group LTD., affiliated with the Formosa Plastics group, is the county's largest employer with about 1,700 employees in its three operating divisions.
