For many people, rodeos offer a chance to meet up with friends, have some fun and watch area cowboys show what they've got.
This weekend's rodeo adds another aspect to the mix. It's a chance to help those in need.
AlzCare will host its Rope to Remember event Friday and Saturday at Chad Chandler's Arena in Victoria. Proceeds will benefit Alzheimer's research, said Lacey Rosenquest, who works with AlzCare and is one of the rodeo's organizers.
Rosenquest said she got the idea to do a rodeo fundraiser because her husband, Cody Rosenquest, competes in team roping and ranch rodeo events.
"I go to support him," she said. "We thought it would be a good way to get the people out here to the rodeo, and it's also a good cause."
Alzheimer's disease destroys brain cells and causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior, according to the Alzheimer's Association Web site. The disease gets worse over time and is fatal. It is the nation's seventh leading cause of death.
"It's a devastating disease," Rosenquest said. "The people affected and their families, everyone needs support."
Friday's event is a ranch rodeo that begins at 7:30 p.m. The event includes steer doctoring, double mugging and trailer loading, and winners will receive belt buckles.
Saturday's team roping event begins at 5 p.m. and winners will also receive belt buckles.
Both days will feature food, beverages and a silent auction, Rosenquest said. The rodeo is free to attend, but donations are appreciated, she said. Organizers hope to make the rodeo an annual event.
The event's organizers said they aren't sure exactly how many people to expect at this year's event or how much they hope to bring in.
If the 2008 Memory Walk - the first one held in Victoria - is any indicator, however, they are optimistic, said Donna Howell, AlzCare's registered nurse manager. The walk brought in about $28,000.
"It shows people are willing to get behind an important cause and help," she said. "This really is a great community."
About 5.5 million people nationwide have Alzheimer's disease, Howell said. Although the disease has no cure, science is still working at it.
"They're doing amazing things for Alzheimer's treatment," she said. "We're hopeful."
