Six members of organized crime ring indicted on theft charges in Lavaca County

HALLETTSVILLE - A Lavaca County grand jury indicted six people Friday on charges that they engaged in an organized crime ring involving stolen construction equipment.

The 15-month criminal investigation was conducted by the Lavaca County Sheriff's Office and the Motor Vehicle Theft Division of the Department of Public Safety, according to a news release.

Paul Gene "Buster" York Jr., 43, of New Caney; Gregory Donnell Newton, 46, of Hallettsville; Frederick Lee Washington, 36, of Houston; Neal Everett Bland, 46, of Houston; Phillip Chevallier, 23, of Houston; and Ricky Lee Wilkerson, 29, of Houston, were indicted for the first-degree felony.

During the investigation, investigators recovered 16 pieces of heavy construction equipment from six Texas counties.

Equipment was valued at more than $700,000 and included bulldozers, backhoes and skid steerloaders, according to the news release.

If the men are convicted, they each face 5 to 99 years in state prison. A fine not to exceed $10,000 could also be assessed in each case.
