Three boaters that had gone missing off Matagorda coast last week were found alive Saturday at approximately 7:30 p.m.
James Phillips, 30, of Blessing, Curtis Hall, 28, of Palacios, and Tressel Hawkins, 43, of Markham were found atop their capsized boat, about 140 miles offshore south of Sabine Pass, said Zack Edwards, U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue Controller out of the Houston-Galveston command center.
The men were found by a Good Samaritan vessel, according to a Coast Guard news release.
Phillips' 23-foot catamaran had capsized last Sunday, Edwards said.
The health condition of the men were unknown as of late Saturday.
On Friday, the Coast Guard had issued a final update suspending the search but leaving the case open.
The Coast Guard had searched 86,000 square miles, or about the size of Minnesota, throughout the six days, according to a news release.
Families of the three men have been notified and will be reunited with the boaters in Port Aransas early Sunday morning.

This is a good news story. I'm stunned however, that I'm having to scour the search engines for more information on this human interest story. The "blurb" in the Advocate is woefully lacking any insight into this story which bore headlines throughout this past week. What has happened to journalism in this town?

August 30, 2009 at 5:05 p.m.Suzy- You must have never fished anywhere besides the Duck pond at Victoria park. When I fish offshore usally 70-80 Nautical miles. I take enough water, ice, sodas, food, bait, clothes, smokes, and everything else that the experienced Gulf fisherman can cram into the boat. And overnight fishing trip offshore is not short, nor is just a day trip out of jetties.

August 30, 2009 at 12:02 p.m.I bet the capsized catamaran had plenty of supplies in the pontoons. If they didn't have any water, they would have been in plenty of trouble after 8 days.
I'm certain they didn't suffer as badly as the folks that are stranded with nothing but sunshine and saltwater.
Who said they refused medical treatment???
August 30, 2009 at 11:17 a.m.I am very happy for their families.
