Sherry Pfister's basketball career at Stroman was a successful one, but not a completely satisfying one.
Pfister played for the Lady Raiders when girls basketball was a six-person, halfcourt game.
"I grew at the Parks & Recreation Department and at the Crain gym playing basketball," Pfister said. "I played with the guys all the time. So halfcourt was kind of boring."
Pfister got to display what she could do on the fullcourt when she attended Sam Houston State University from 1980 to 1983.
She became the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,975 points. She holds five career school records and ranks second all-time with 962 career rebounds.
In 1982, Pfister was named the women's player of the year by Texas Association of Intercollegiate Athletics after averaging 19.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game and leading the Bearkats to a 27-5 record, the most wins ever in a season for the Sam Houston women.
Pfister will be honored for her accomplishments with her induction into the Sam Houston State Hall of Honor. Induction ceremonies for the Class of 2009 are scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Lowman Student Center in Huntsville.
"It's really neat," Pfister said. "It's a tremendous honor."
Pfister carried her love for basketball into her career and has spent 28 years teaching and coaching at the junior high and high school levels.
She began her coaching career at Hays Consolidated and moved to Bastrop before getting a job at Elgin, where she's been for 18 years, working mostly with underclassmen.
"I enjoy the junior high level," she said. "For a while I thought I'd like to teach something beside a right-handed layup, but I'm still doing that. I never really had the desire to be a head coach. I really enjoy the teaching part."
Pfister is currently the girls athletic coordinator and freshman basketball coach at Elgin.
"I've seen the girls game evolve into what it is today," Pfister said. "We've come a long way."
