PORT LAVACA - Kristie Villarreal, a Port Lavaca native, will share the stage with her childhood idols, La Mafia, on Friday at Bauer Community Center.

La Mafia, a staple in the Tejano music scene since 1980, won four Grammy awards. By and large, the band is considered one of the most successful among Latin recording artists.

Growing up, La Mafia was a staple of Villarreal's musical diet along with Elsa Garcia, Elida Reyna and the slain queen of Tejano, Selena.

At the first concert she attended, she saw Garcia perform.

Villarreal started singing when she was 15-years-old, but didn't break into the industry until 2007, a year before she released her debut album "La Misma Mujer."

She has performed to support that record, but touring is difficult because she also maintains a full-time job and is a single mother, she said.

She will be in the studio in 2010 to record her yet untitled follow-up album.

The Advocate caught up with Villarreal to discuss her dream-come-true gig.

Q: Who are your influences?

A: The beautiful thing about this is La Mafia was my main influence in the industry. I have been a fan of theirs since I was a child. To share the same stage with them, it's huge for me. That's why we're promoting this, because it's a really big event for me and probably one of the biggest highlights of my career to share the stage with them.
